Why Start Working From Home?

Why Start Working From Home? This is such a significant question, millions of people worldwide have been either wondering about; making the decision to; having the decision made by bosses; or have the desire to own a business.

With Brexit causing such uncertainty both from within the British Isles and equally throughout the European Union; division in the USA with the newly elected President Trump; making the decision to work from home has never been more of an appealing option.

I’ve been in the position where I was working in a very stressful environment and due to budget cuts, would have to do extra work because my employers couldn’t afford to employ the staff numbers they needed.

I worked for a number of years for the same company and witnessed the staff cuts, budget cuts AND I also had a ‘pay-rise freeze’ throughout the final three years I worked there!

Luckily I could afford to live on my wages but many people just can’t manage on the money they earn. Stuff like ‘zero hours contracts’ doesn’t help.

Financial insecurity is everywhere – I say it to people time and time again; working from home, running my own online business, is one of the best decisions I have made in my working career.

I would NEVER go back to being an employee.

A Home-Based Business Should NOT Be An Option Anymore!

This is a great article I read recently on the Wealthy Affiliate platform. It’s well worth taking a look at. It goes over Social Security statistics looking at 100 people at the beginning of their working careers following through 40 years. There are some startling findings.

— I Work From Home

This is a very funny article transcribing a conversation between a 911 Operator and a man called Robert, who works from home. It was written by Colin Nissan who writes Daily Shouts for ‘The New Yorker’, the piece is called, ‘I Work From Home’.

911 OPERATOR: 911—what’s your emergency?

ROBERT: Hi, I . . . uh . . . I work from home.

OPERATOR: O.K., is anyone else there with you, sir?

ROBERT: No, I’m alone.

OPERATOR: And when’s the last time you saw someone else? Was that today?

ROBERT: Uh, my wife . . . this morning, I guess.

OPERATOR: Anyone else?

ROBERT: I don’t think so. Well, the mailman, but that was through the blinds. I don’t know if that counts.

OPERATOR: I’m afraid not. (Pause.) I’m going to ask you to open the blinds, O.K.? Let’s go ahead and let some light in.

ROBERT: How much light??

OPERATOR: Just a little is fine.

ROBERT: O.K. (Pause.) I did it. (Pause.) It’s bright. It feels so bright on my face.

OPERATOR: That’s good. That’s how it’s supposed to feel. (Pause.) I need you to tell me what you’re wearing, O.K.?

ROBERT: You know . . . just regular clothes.

OPERATOR: Outside clothes or inside clothes?

ROBERT: Hold on, I’ll check. (Pause.) Pajamas. I’m wearing my pajamas. I could swear I’d changed into regular . . . I thought these were jeans!

OPERATOR: It’s O.K., sir. Calm down.

ROBERT: Wait, this isn’t even a shirt. It’s just my skin! Goddammit.

OPERATOR: So just pajama bottoms, then. Can we assume that you haven’t showered today?

ROBERT: I don’t know.

OPERATOR: I need you to walk over to the bathroom to see if your towel is damp. O.K.? Can you do that for me?

ROBERT: I think so.

OPERATOR: Great.

ROBERT: I’m walking over there. (Pause.) O.K., I’m here. I’m in the bathroom. I see my towel . . . .

(Muffled sobs.)

OPERATOR: Sir?

ROBERT: It’s dry.

OPERATOR: O.K., that’s O.K. Let’s get you back over to the window where the light is, all right? Walk toward the light. (Pause.) What’s your name, sir?

That’s not the whole story, read more here at The New Yorker

Anybody with experience of working from home will identify with some aspects of this. If self-motivation is an issue, a person could find themselves in a similar position.

Or, you could loose yourself to the online world, never to be seen ‘away from the screen’, ever again! 🙂 just kidding.

  1. I myself am tired of working the day-to-day job. I have always been interested in working from home. Being my own boss was always a dream but I wanted it to become a reality. Recently I joined Wealthy Affiliate and I see that we are both members. I’m a newbie and I know I’ve got a lot to learn. It was interesting reading your article. I enjoyed it. If I have any questions I will certainly will reach out to you.

  2. Working from home must be nice! I can totally relate to your experience of working in the work place. It is so dreadful and some of the people are so annoying!

I always dreamt of working from home but it is still a dream sadly. I have tried many methods but none seem to work. You seem to have hit the jackpot. How long have you been working from home?

    1. So sorry you’re having a hard time at work all I can say is don’t give up your dream!

Join Wealthy Affiliate, follow the lessons there and stick to their training and you too can be working from home 🙂

I’ve been working from home for about 5 years now but it’s only this last year that I’ve experienced success and I believe that’s down to the training at WA.

  3. Hi Suzanne, I really like your article on working from home. I’ve always wanted to have my own business where I can work from home and be my own boss.

I took a look at the article you posted by Wealthy Affiliate about Why You Should Start A Home Based Business. It was an eye opener for sure and reaffirms my desire to start my own home based business.

How long does it take to get a home based business up and running?

Do you recommend a certain program to start with?

Thanks for sharing the great information.
    Mitch

    1. Hi Mitch,

Glad you got something from reading the article, sounds like you and me both were reaffirmed regarding working from home.

      To answer your questions:

How long does it take to get a home based business up and running?

      and

Do you recommend a certain program to start with?

I’d turn it round and answer the second question first because choosing right from the start will determine your success at getting your own home-based-business up and running.

Wealthy Affiliate is my No1 recommendation for an online training platform, full stop!

Then the next question is a bit tricky to answer because there’s so many determining factors but a rough guesstimate would be six months to a year.

I can talk to you more about this so reply to this comment if you want 🙂

      regards
      Suzanne

  4. I can really relate to you Suzanne. Being employed is not a great feeling, especially during economic downturn. You’ll never know when your employer will be forced to cut staff, and it might be you next. Working from home is a great idea to supplement our income and one I’m currently doing too =)

By the way, the social security statistics are downright scary.. I ready don’t want to be in the 95% group..

    1. Hi Isaac, thanks for commenting. I truly believe working at home online is the way forward, for me at least. It has provided me with the income I need to forever keep me out of the 95% group. Keep doing what you’re doing Isaac and you’ll be ok too 🙂

      regards

      Suzanne

  5. Hello,

thank you for sharing a very interesting, in-depth article about working at home. I have to point out, you really explain in detail everything we need to know about ways to work from home. A lot of people these days want to work this way because they can spend more time with family and don’t have to work 9 to 5 jobs.

    1. Being around the home more is a big plus for me. We have 2 dogs and it’s great to not have to put them in day care.
