When building an online business, the website itself it one thing but how do you get people to visit your site? The internet is packed full of websites, quite possibly with many based around similar topics or niches to yours. There are things you need to do to your website to ensure people can find it when searching for information that you are writing about.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is what we do to enable the search engines to find our site. This article will cover some SEO Basics: Beginners Level, discussing WordPress plugins that can help and also on and off page SEO.
On-page SEO – The first steps
The first thing to do when you have your website installed is to install a plugin called ‘All in One SEO’. It configures the code on your website properly so that the search engines can index and rank the site in the correct way.
The plugin will allow you to specify the meta title and description of the article as shown in the image below and it automatically generates meta tags and notifies the search engines such as Google and Bing about changes to your site.
The plugin has a ‘Feature Manager’ that allows you to activate special tools such as ‘XML Sitemaps’ and ‘Social Meta’. The first creates your website sitemap and the second allows you to specify the exact title, description and image that will be shared when someone shares the particular article to Facebook, Twitter and Google+.
I wrote an article listing my ’10 Must have WordPress Plugins for your Business Website’. I’d suggest you take a look at this and consider installing the plugins mentioned.
Off-page SEO – What it is exactly?
Off-page SEO is all about building out your brand online using Social Media or other methods of promoting your site. Lots of social media sites either allow you to include your website information and a link to your site, or they have the option to upgrade a personal account to a business account. Some sites have business pages that can be used to help promote a business to followers.
Social Media Marketing enables you to reach potential audiences and engage with them. This helps with creating a relationship with potential customers and to build trust.
Getting Your Site Ready For SEO
There’s some pretty good training here about getting your site ready for SEO from Kyle, the owner of Wealthy Affiliate.
Track your Website Progress with Webmaster Tools
To keep a check on your website progress over time, it is advisable to create Google Analytics and Bing Webmaster Tools accounts.
Here you will be able to track valuable information regarding your website pages, such as how much traffic your site receives and where this traffic comes from.
It also provides information about the sites that link to your website and your site health. You will also need Google and Bing accounts if you decide to pay for traffic to your promotions, using Pay Per Click Advertising.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this article. It is very basic information to hopefully get you started with search engine optimization. My suggestion would be to join a training platform that teaches SEO Basics to Advanced level and Wealthy Affiliate is the best there is!
