What to Make a Website About

So, you want to build a website, excellent news. Having all the available social media profiles are great. However, you feel you have a bit more to offer and have decided to go that step further, with creating your very own website – good for you! Here are 5 tips that will point you in the right direction and help you choose what to make a website about.

What to Make a Website About

1Pick a topic or niche for your site

You can’t just start a site about nothing, subject matter and content is everything. You could right a person blog with stories and articles related to you and your life. Maybe there is a subject you have a real passion about and could write lots about – or maybe you want to help someone; loose weight; fight depression; grow vegetables; learn to play guitar; the list is endless. You might want to learn something yourself, such as ‘how to make money online’, for example; researching and writing about your journey could be your niche.

I chose the niche; ‘Work at Home Online’ because it’s what I do everyday and whilst I’ve learnt lots and I’ve also made mistakes; all subject matter I can write about and hopefully help others’ with also.

Know who your target audience will be

2Know who your target audience will be

Determining who you are writing for is key when building a website. Is your site geared towards a particular group of people with similar interests? Are you targeting men or women; younger or older people? In other words, who will actually be reading your articles? There are a multitude of topics, audiences, and niches; each will require a different set of writing styles and techniques.

Just naming a few different potential target audiences provides a feeling of what might be needed for each. For example: a young stay-at-home mother looking to supplement her income; a middle-aged man looking to create a retirement fund, or a college student, looking for information – these will all have very different needs. A good way to plan your site would be to have some target audiences in mind and check out other sites on the net to see their approaches.

3Your own website vs. a free website

There are many reasons a person would choose to go for a free website: limited funds, lack of knowledge or confidence, easy to get started and so on…But your own website is your piece of Real Estate that looks professional and can be branded.

I would always opt for my own domain with a .com extension, however if you are starting out on the Internet, a free site will make this so much easier. Here you can do some learning and gain confidence. Once you’ve done this, you can always move your content over to your very own domain.

You might even begin a website portfolio, with many sites in different niches, all making money! How cool would that be?

4Ways you could make money from your website

If you’re going to put lots of time and effort into creating a site, it would be silly not to have monetization in mind. Some of the ways of making money are from allowing advertising to be placed on your website, Google AdSense are the top players here. You could promote either digital or physical products, by writing articles and reviews, while incorporating affiliate links. Some people create products and promote them. It is important to keep in mind whatever method you choose, that quality content always needs to come first.

Turn a website into a business

5Turn a website into a business

Turning a website into a business is entirely possible but you need to have the knowhow to successfully achieve this. There are a number of ways you can do this; blindly try and figure it all out by yourself and wish for the best; or get some help.

Although the Internet is brilliant, there are a lot of fraudsters out there and it is can be easy to fall prey to some of the scams. My suggestion would always be Wealthy Affiliate which is where I learned everything I know.

  3. Hi, Suzanne. Great article. I love the way you’ve clearly prioritize all steps. That is not an uncommon situation when people build their website first before getting an understanding what this site will actually be about. Also, it’s a good idea to keep the entire path from choosing the niche to monetizing on the website in mind from the start. Thank you. Kirill.

  7. I agree that picking a niche should be your number one priority when you are making a website.
Without a clear vision, your website will be too cluttered and too broad of the subject. People will get confused.
