Teen tells police he’s missing boy Timmothy Pitzen, last seen in 2011

Boy last seen in Wisconsin in 2011 possibly found alive, says he was held captive

Brian Michael Rini, 23, told neighbors in the Kentucky town of Newport that he had escaped kidnappers and was Timmothy, who would be 14 years old, briefly raising hope that the long-lost boy had been found, Federal Bureau of Investigation spokesman Todd Lindgren said.

The boy was taken to a hospital in Newport to be checked out and police say he is being interviewed by detectives and other uniformed officers.

"We've probably had thousands of tips of him popping up in different areas", Aurora police Sgt. Bill Rowley said Wednesday.

For a day and a half, a breakthrough seemed to be at hand when a young man found wandering the streets of Newport, Kentucky, on Wednesday identified himself as 14-year-old Timmothy Pitzen.

Federal Bureau of Investigation field offices in Louisville and Cincinnati said they were investigating a missing child case with law enforcement agencies in Aurora, Illinois, Cincinnati and Hamilton County, Ohio, as well as in Newport, Kentucky.

Pitzen was last seen in May 2011.

According to a police report, the teen later said he had escaped his captors - two men - at a nearby motel in OH, bolting for safety over a bridge connecting Cincinnati to Kentucky.

Hopes were briefly raised on Wednesday (local time) when a man, who said he had escaped kidnappers, was Timmothy, however DNA tests have revealed that he actually Brian Rini of Medina in northeast Ohio.

"I say it's a double-edged sword because yes they're excited. but there's always some form of self-reflection where they say, 'Where's my child?' So it's a hard road for all searching parents out there", he said. They were driving a white newer model Ford SUV with yellow transfer paint, Wisconsin plates and a dent on the left back bumper.

Timmothy Pitzen's grandmother, Alana Anderson, told WISN-TV that authorities have told the family very little.

But DNA results proved he is not the missing child, the FBI's Louisville office said.

Linda Ramirez, who lives nearby and knew the family, said she was "pretty excited" but didn't "want to have false hopes".

"I just prayed that when he was old enough that he would remember us and contact us", she said.

Timmothy Pitzen was a tow-headed 6-year-old on May 11, 2011, when his mother picked him up early from kindergarten at Greenman Elementary School. Police said Pitzen took her son to Brookfield Zoo and to Key Lime Cove in Gurnee. (40 miles north), then to a Kalahari Resort in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin.

And they had reason to believe he may still be alive: his mother left notes saying Timmothy was safe but would never be found. "You'll never find him", it read, CNN reported. Police investigating her death said she took steps that suggest she might have dropped her son off with a friend.

Of Rini, she said he had "obviously had a disgusting time and felt the need to say he was someone else, and [I] hope that they can find his family". On May 14, her body was found in a motel room in Rockford. An image, right, shows an age-progressed photo of Timmothy, who is now 14.

Timmothy Pitzen disappeared in 2011.

In 2013, her phone was discovered on the side of a northern IL road, but its data did not offer new direction.
