Sudan protesters demand civilian rule, military council says ready to comply

African Union chief Moussa Faki

Sudan's transitional military council has been sworn in two days after the ouster of President Omar al-Bashir.

Himeidti is a field commander for the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) counter-insurgency unit, which rights groups have accused of abuses in the war-torn Darfur region.

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates meanwhile issued statements in support of Sudan's transitional military council. He was arrested the following year on suspicion of involvement in a coup attempt but was later pardoned by al-Bashir, who appointed him intelligence chief in February 2018.

He praised Sudan's large protest movement, saying, "We applaud this revolutionary discipline and awareness and ask them to come together to enforce the slogans of the revolution, "Freedom, Peace, Justice".

Ibn Auf was replaced by Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who pledged on Saturday to "uproot the regime" of al-Bashir, release detained protesters and hold talks with all political parties and groups behind the months-long protests.

In a statement, the organizers said they have called for the formation of a fully civilian government.

The military ended al-Bashir's almost 30-year reign and placed him under house arrest in the capital.

It is time for the Transitional Military Council and all other parties to enter into an inclusive dialogue to affect a transition to civilian rule.

Also known as Salah Gosh, Salih was the architect of a powerful security apparatus under al-Bashir.

"We want you to agree on an independent figure to be prime minister and agree on a civilian government".

"We have done it, we have done it", most Sudanese took to the streets to rejoice.

An alliance of opposition parties and activists have vowed to continue protesting until the military council now in power heeds their demands.

The African Union said his overthrow was "not the appropriate response to the challenges facing Sudan and the aspirations of its people".

Al-Burhan was "committed to having a complete civilian government and the role of the council will be to maintain the sovereignty of the country", the ministry said, adding that he meant to prepare an environment for political parties and civil society to build themselves up "in order to have a peaceful transition of power".

"The ministry of foreign affairs is looking forward to the global community to understand the situation and to support the transitional military council.in order to achieve the Sudanese goal of democratic transition", the ministry said in a statement.

Despite the fact that protesters do not accept military presence at the top of the government, Saudi Arabia has defended the presence of the militaries in Sudan. The UAE urged Sudanese "to work for protecting legitimacy and ensuring a peaceful transfer of power".

Riyadh also announced a package of humanitarian aid, including petroleum products, wheat and medicines.

"It is crucial that Sudan's new authorities investigate Salah Ghosh's role in the killings of scores of Sudanese protesters over the past four months", said Amnesty's regional director Sarah Jackson.
