Mueller report to be redacted, released "within a week": US Attorney General

The White House and congressional Democrats have been battling over the Mueller report since the release of Barr's letter. "So I think it's important in our oversight role to release the full report to Congress".

Testifying before the House Appropriations Subcommittee, ostensibly to discuss other matters, Barr told representatives that he is preparing to release the report within a week.

Mr Barr's decision comes following the release of the Mueller report last month which found no links between Trump's 2016 Presidential election campaign and Russian Federation interference. The Democrats are demanding that they see the full report and all its underlying evidence as Trump and his Republican allies are pushing back.

But Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee had provided members with a list of suggested questions, and as appropriators the lawmakers do have leverage: They could withhold or put conditions on the Justice Department's budget.

This silence comes hours after Attorney General William Barr similarly refused to say if Trump had seen Mueller's report on his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Barr said he gave the Mueller team a chance to review his summary of the Mueller report, but they declined.

Rep. Nita Lowey (D- N.Y.), chair of the appropriations committee, described Barr's handling of the matter as "unacceptable" and accused him of "cherry picking" Mueller's findings "to draw the most favorable conclusion possible for the president".

"Even for someone who has done this job before, I would argue it's more suspicious than impressive", Ms Lowey said.

"A headline today is that William Barr's personally reviewing the conduct of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in launching the Trump Russia collusion hoax".

As members of Congress continued to press Barr on questions about the report during an appropriations hearing about the Justice Department's budget request, Barr noted that he will be in a position to answer more questions about the report in testimony before the House and Senate Judiciary committees after he releases the report in the coming days.

The Justice Department will redact grand-jury information, information that would reveal intelligence sources and methods, information that affects the privacy of "peripheral players" not charged as a result of the investigation, and information that would compromise ongoing prosecutions, Barr said.

He asked whether the Justice Department would look into whether the Federal Bureau of Investigation should have sought a court order to conduct surveillance on former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page.

Barr said in the summary that Mueller did not reach a conclusion on whether the president obstructed justice and instead presented evidence on both sides of the question. He has said that he did not intend for his four-page summary of Mueller's main conclusions to be an "exhaustive recounting" of his work and that he could not immediately release the entire report because it included grand jury material and other sensitive information that needed to be redacted.

Mr Barr did confirm however, that he will release the report "within a week".

"I look forward to reviewing the Mueller report myself", she added later in her remarks.

Barr is likely to testify on May 1 before the Republican-controlled Senate Judiciary Committee.

Barr told Congress that there were "no plans" to assert executive privilege and that the president told the attorney general to make the decisions regarding whether something should be redacted from the released Mueller report.

Trump seems to be of the same mind.
