Julian Assange should face justice in Sweden: U.K. lawmakers

Julian Assange was bundled into a police van following his arrest at the Ecuadorian embassy

On Thursday, British police forcibly removed Assange from the Ecuadorean Embassy, where he had taken asylum for nearly seven years.

The cost to taxpayers of policing Assange's stay in the Ecuadorean embassy and his failed attempt to avoid extradition to Sweden for questioning on sexual assault allegations - which went all the way to the Supreme Court - is thought to have passed £15 million.

Julian Assange's mother has taken to Twitter to call on authorities to be gentle with her son, who's jailed in London after his removal from the Ecuadorian Embassy.

The letter to the Home Secretary was organised by Labour MP Stella Creasy and stated: "We are writing to request that you do everything you can to champion action that will ensure Julian Assange can be extradited to Sweden in the event Sweden make an extradition request".

Sweden suspended its investigation into possible serious sexual misconduct against Assange two years ago because he was beyond their reach while he was living in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London with political asylum status. British police said Assange had been arrested Thursday for breaching his bail conditions and in relation to the us arrest request.

Assange has denied wrongdoing. Prosecution of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is the U.S. political elite's revenge over information that he made public, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

Following Assange's arrest in London on an unrelated US hacking charge, Clinton said that he should be held responsible.

However, relations with his Ecuadoran hosts gradually soured and pro-US President Lenin Moreno on Thursday pulled his asylum, cancelled his citizenship and permitted British police to remove Assange.

WikiLeaks founder Assange, 47, is facing rape and sexual assault allegations in Sweden.

"In this case, the suspected crime of rape would be subject to statute of limitation in mid-August 2020".

"It does not prevent the suspect from being extradited to the USA".

The U.S. indictment filed in March 2018 said Assange, in March 2010, engaged in a conspiracy to help Manning crack a password stored on Defense Department computers connected to the Secret Internet Protocol Network (SIPRNet), a U.S. government network used for classified documents and communications.

Speaking to the Guardian, Elizabeth Massi Fritz, the lawyer for the Swedish woman whose case remains without closure, said the news of Assange's arrest had come as a "shock" to her and her client.

Referring to Mr Assange, Lord Falconer said: "I don't think politicians should be saying he should or should not be... extradited".

But she said Assange should face the criminal justice system if the Swedish government charged him. He also sought refuge because of fears that Sweden would ultimately extradite him to the U.S.
