Ethiopia to investigate crashed plane problems for up to a year

Ethiopian Air pilots turned off 737 MAX anti-stall system. Then it turned on again

"The crew performed all the procedures repeatedly provided by the manufacturer but was not able to control the aircraft", said Dagmawit Moges, unveiling results of the preliminary probe into the crash.

In the news conference, Dagmawit referred to safety recommendations in the preliminary report that point to the new flight-control system on the MAX that seems to have activated inadvertently - the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System, or MCAS.

It recommended that Boeing "review the controllability system of the plane". They are looking into the role of a flight-control system known by its acronym, MCAS, which under some circumstances can automatically lower the plane's nose to prevent an aerodynamic stall.

Investigators of a doomed Ethiopian Airlines plane on Thursday denied recent reports that a foreign object might have caused the tragic plane crash that killed all 157 people aboard. Both planes were relatively new 737 MAX 8 aircraft and both displayed similar flight behavior just prior to the crash, indicating that the MCAS system may have been linked to both crashes.

All 737 MAX jets have been grounded across the world by the Federal Aviation Administration.

"We are very proud of our pilots' compliances to follow the emergency procedures and high level of professional performances in such extremely hard situations", Ethiopian Airlines CEO said in a statement on April 4, following the report's release.

The Senate panel's probe is the latest in a string of investigations by USA officials and lawmakers into how the FAA cleared the 737 Max as safe to fly.

The minister says Ethiopian airlines pilots followed proper Boeing procedures as she delivered the first official report on the disaster.

Boeing also is continuing to work closely with the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) as technical advisors in support of the AIB investigation.

Aviation safety analyst Paul Hayes said deeper investigation would delve into the role played by software and how pilots were able to respond, and said he hoped scars from the 2010 dispute would not get in the way of a comprehensive investigation.

No significant new technical issues have so far emerged in the Ethiopian investigation beyond those already being addressed by Boeing through updated software in the aftermath of the Lion Air crash, a person familiar with the findings said. Ethiopia's Transport Ministry also stated that a report on the issue would be released on Thursday. They began to use electric switches to try to raise the plane's nose, according to these people.

"Blinded by its greed, Boeing haphazardly rushed the 737 Max 8 to market" and "actively concealed the nature of the automated system defects", the lawsuit alleges, demonstrating a "conscious disregard for the lives of others".

The Federal Aviation Administration, which has come under fire over the way it made a decision to certify the plane and its MCAS software, cautioned the investigation had not yet concluded.

"The FAA expects to receive Boeing's final package of its software enhancement over the coming weeks for FAA approval", an FAA spokesperson said in a statement to Ars Technica.

- Boeing has stopped delivery of all new MAX jets.

"We are slightly taking their word for what they are saying is in the report", Quest said.
