U.S. judge sentences Manafort to 73 months in prison

Paul Manafort

Shortly after his second sentencing in federal court in recent days, Paul J. Manafort, President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman, found himself on Wednesday facing 16 charges in NY, including mortgage fraud and more than a dozen other state felonies.

Judge Amy Berman Jackson of the U.S. District Court of Columbia sentenced Manafort to an additional 3.5 years in prison on Wednesday.

Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort is due back in court for his second sentencing hearing in as many weeks. She added three-and-a-half years on top of the almost four-year sentence Manafort received last week in a separate case in Virginia, though he'll get credit for nine months already served.

The charges, to which Manafort had pleaded guilty, were brought as part of special counsel Robert Mueller's probe investigating Russian meddling in the 2016 USA presidential election.

Trump and his allies are likely to criticize the timing of Vance's announcement, which came minutes after Mueller wrapped up his prosecution of the former campaign chairman.

Mueller's investigation appears to be winding down, although no end date has been set for him to deliver a report on his investigation to the Justice Department and Attorney General William Barr.

Paul Manafort has been hit with new criminal charges in New York City not even an hour after learning his prison sentence for federal crimes.

The charges, brought by Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance, were widely anticipated, especially as speculation mounted about a potential presidential pardon on federal crimes for which he's been sentenced.

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance, Jr., said a NY grand jury charged Manafort with 16 counts including residential mortgage fraud, conspiracy, falsifying business records and a scheme to defraud.

President Trump told reporters at the White House he feels "badly" for his former campaign chair. Although the president has the power to issue pardons for federal crimes, the authority does not extend to convictions in state court.

"The no-collusion mantra is simply a non sequitur", she said, suggesting that those arguments were meant for an audience outside the courtroom - presumably the president.

But Jackson dismissed his plea for no more prison time on the charges of conspiring to launder money and tamper with witnesses. She allowed a disagreement over Manafort's bail to carry on for months and only threw him in jail last June when he was indicted for an attempt to tamper with witnesses in the case.

"That results in a very harsh process for the defendant", Downing said.

"Court is one of those places where facts still matter", she added.

"This case has taken everything from me, already", he said, naming all his assets now in the government's possession.

Last week, he also received a almost four-year sentence in a separate case in Virginia for financial crimes.

"I am sorry for what I have done and for all the activities that have gotten us here today", he told the judge.

"Please let my wife and I be together", he said, playing the age card; he is about to turn 70. "I would be surprised if she really threw the book at him".

"But for a short stint as a campaign manager in a presidential election, I don't think we'd be here today", Manafort lawyer Kevin Downing told Jackson, and asked her to take media coverage of the case into account in determining the sentence. "Why would I take it off the table?"
