Trump encircled: House Democrats launch sprawling probe into 'abuse of power'

House Judiciary Committee to request documents from dozens including Donald Trump Jr. to begin investigation into obstruction of justice

President Trump says that he cooperates with "everybody" after House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler announced Monday that he had delivered a batch of document requests as a first step in his investigation into the president and his associates.

Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee are coming for President Donald Trump.

"These allegations, if true, raise profound national security, counter-intelligence, and foreign policy concerns, especially in light of Russia's ongoing active measures campaign to improperly influence American elections", Chairmen Adam Schiff, Elliot Engel and Elijah Cummings wrote in their letter.

Nadler's investigation - notably taking place in the Judiciary Committee - would likely be cited in impeachment proceedings.

The White House said its lawyers and "relevant White House officials" would review the Judiciary Committee's demand for documents and "respond at the appropriate time". "As a result, we are now expanding our investigation".

Hanging on: Donald Trump grabs the U.S. flag at a conference in Maryland at the weekend.

Nadler previously said that he believed Trump obstructed justice, which would be an impeachable offense. The House and Senate intelligence committees found no evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation.

Nadler's committee aims to determine whether the Republican president obstructed justice by possibly offering pardons or tampering with witnesses and by ousting perceived enemies, such as former FBI Director James Comey.

FILE - Special counsel Robert Mueller, in charge of investigating Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election and possible collusion between Moscow and the Trump campaign, departs Capitol Hill, in Washington, June 21, 2017.

"We don't even know what the Mueller report says, but Democrats are already hedging their bets", Representative Doug Collins (R-Ga.) said". "It's our job to protect the rule of law", Nadler said on ABC's "This Week".

"Look, the president has the right to do a lot of things but he can abuse his power in doing that", he said when asked Sunday about the Times report.

Among the 81 people and places that have been sent requests: the White House, Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump, adviser Jared Kushner, former Attorney General Jeff Sessions, former campaign chair Paul Manafort, Trump 2020 campaign manager Brad Parscale, Trump Organization Chief Operating Officer Matthew Calamari, Trump Organization Chief Financial Officer Allen Weisselberg, Trump Organization General Counsel Alan Garten, Trump executive assistant Rhona Graff, among many others.

That investigation was subsequently taken over by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is expected to deliver his findings to the US attorney general within weeks. He said that Trump's former long-time personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, in his lengthy public testimony to Congress last week, "directly implicated the president in - in various crimes, both while seeking the office of president and while in the White House".

Nancy Pelosi has backed off suggestions from those in her party who seek to impeach President Donald Trump.
