Pakistan says its jets crossed LoC to undertake strikes in India

Meeting of the National Command Authority will be held at the Prime Minister's office at 1:00pm

Pakistan's army spokesman says the country's air force shot down two Indian warplanes after they crossed the boundary between the two nuclear-armed rivals in the disputed territory of Kashmir, and that one Indian pilot was captured. One Indian pilot arrested by troops on ground while two in the area.

Hours later, Pakistan's Civil Aviation Authority said it shut Pakistani airspace to all commercial flights on Wednesday, without elaborating or indicating when the flights might resume.

In another statement, Pakistan's foreign ministry said it had struck "non military targets" but avoided "human loss and collateral damage".

After the Indian Air Force (IAF) carried out air strikes on terror camps in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir on Tuesday, the United States warned Islamabad to not resort to any military action and instead take action against terrorists. At least one private Indian airliner, Vistara, said airspace across north India had been closed and flights to and from Amritsar, Srinagar, Chandigarh and Jammu have been put on hold.

India acknowledged one of its air force planes was "lost" in skirmishes with Pakistan and that its pilot was "missing in action" on a chaotic day, which also saw mortar shells fired by Indian troops from across the frontier dividing the two sectors of Kashmir kill six civilians and wound several others.

The Indians Aircraft crossed Line of Control (LOC) and entered Pakistani Airspace.

Tensions escalated dramatically between Pakistan and India on February 14 when a young man - a native of Indian Occupied Kashmir (IOK) - rammed an explosives-laden auto into an Indian military convoy, killing 44 soldiers.

Pakistan has denied involvement in the Kashmir bombing on February 14.

He then asks if he is in the custody of the Pakistan military.

"Can we afford any miscalculation with the kind of weapons that we have and you have?" the prime minister said, alluding to the nuclear arsenal of both the countries and asking: "If escalation begins from here, where will it go?"

Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Ms Khar claimed the action from Pakistan was "retaliatory".

The militant groups are fighting for either Kashmir's independence or its merger with Pakistan.

Addressing the press conference, DG ISPR said Pakistan had no choice other than hitting back.

The US Secretary of State spoke with both Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Indian Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj.

Indian air force spokesman Anupam Banerjee in New Delhi said he has no information on Pakistan's statement.

Earlier Wednesday, the Indian foreign minister sought to ease the situation by downplaying Tuesday's strike, repeating Indian claims that it had been a pre-emptive attack on JeM as the group planned further assaults.

The authority, in a notification, announced it has officially closed its airspace till tomorrow midnight, in the wake of escalating border tensions between Pakistan and India.

Pakistan has said it was not involved in the attack and was ready to help New Delhi in the investigations.
