New Zealand tries to come to terms with mosque massacre

Armed police following a shooting at the Al Noor mosque in Christchurch New Zealand

Nicola Sturgeon has joined leaders around the world in condemning the terror attacks on two mosques in New Zealand which have left 49 dead.

Islamic law calls for bodies to be cleansed and buried as soon as possible after death, usually within 24 hours.

He said Australian authorities were investigating any links between the country and the attack, but declined to provide further details about the gunman.

Others across Suffolk have also paid their tributes to people involved in the attacks.

He added: " Out of respect and in condolence for all those killed in the terrorist attack in New Zealand, I have asked for flags to be flown at half-mast". "So we are doing that as quickly and as sensitively as possible".

Additional police will also be deployed to religious building and services over the weekend, Police Commissioner Ian Stewart said, according to the News.com.au website.

The man accused of killing 49 people at two New Zealand mosques appeared in court Saturday where he was charged with murder.

There are now four individuals who have been apprehended, but three are connected to this attack and are now in custody, one of which has publicly stated that they were Australian born.

Police are seen in front of Christchurch Hospital during a lockdown on March 15, 2019 in Christchurch.

"If your child was attending the climate change protest in Cathedral Square and you want to check if they are in the Civic Offices, please call the Council Contact Centre on 03-941-8999", Christchurch City Council said.

The European Commission said: "This senseless act of brutality on innocent people in their place of worship could not be more opposite to the values and the culture of peace and unity that the European Union shares with New Zealand". About two dozen men received instructions on their duties Sunday morning, which included Muslim burial customs. "We're also removing any praise or support for the crime and the shooter or shooters as soon as we're aware", she said. "We are all here to help them in washing the body, putting them in the grave". "We stand in solidarity with the Muslim community", it continues.

"The family understands that it's a crime scene".

Still, it was hard, he said, because the grieving process wouldn't really begin until he could bury his cousin.

- New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the national security threat level has been lifted from low to high, adding the shootings appeared to have been a well-planned "terrorist attack". As a light rain fell, people clutched each other and wept quietly. "To close your doors until you hear from us again", he said.

One of those arrested live-streamed the shooting at one of the mosques on Facebook with a GoPro camera attached to him. As the rest of us prepare to undertake our own Friday prayers today, we do so with the anxiety as to whether our mosques and communities are safe in the face of unabated Islamophobia and hostility against Muslims. Facebook, Twitter and Google scrambled to take down the video, which was widely available on social media for hours after the bloodbath.
