Justin Trudeau says he's learned from scandal but does not apologise

Justin Trudeau shares a new version of what happened at his September 2018 meeting with Jody Wilson-Raybould

The lone Northwestern Ontario representative in the Trudeau cabinet believes the prime minister is disappointed that he was unaware of the breakdown in trust between the former attorney general and one of his most trusted staffers. When pressed, the prime minister said he would not apologize for his actions as he believed his team was performing its duties appropriately.

SNC-Lavalin, which employs 9,000 people in Canada, was seeking a so-called "deferred prosecution agreement" to allow the firm to escape with a fine.

Manitoba Metis Federation President David Chartrand said it was hypocritical for Wilson-Raybould to turn down the Indigenous Services position because the Justice Department is responsible for the "choke hold" on First Nations, Metis and Inuit rights. The company was also accused of going on to defraud the Libyan government for as much as $97.3 million.

"I will miss the input of the former attorney general and Dr. Philpott but I will also enjoy my continued relationships with them as members of Parliament".

Last week he called on Trudeau to resign because "he'd lost the moral authority to govern", Scheer said.

In other words, jobs, even jobs in Quebec, even allegedly 9,000 SNC jobs, are not to be part of a prosecutor's decision.

On Wednesday, Trudeau's former principal secretary, Gerald Butts - who also resigned in the midst of the controversy - offered an account different from Wilson-Raybould's.

Butts would only say he received internal government briefings on the matter. However, he confessed that there are lessons to be learned.

He urged Liberal MPs to "speak truth to power" - a reference to Wilson-Raybould's infamous statement after she was removed as attorney general - and send a signal that Trudeau "is not entitled to be the prime minister of Canada".

After all that, Trudeau said the testimony has revealed a "difference in perspective" on conversations that took place "among colleagues about how to tackle a hard issue".

It has signed reimbursement agreements, settlements and compliance agreements with organizations as diverse as the Quebec government, the African Development Bank Group and Elections Canada (for illegal contributions to the Liberal party) and has been debarred for 10 years from bidding on projects by the World Bank because of misconduct. The Liberal-controlled committee has nixed the idea of bringing Wilson-Raybould back. And she said that she would. Or something like that: He said he wished Ms. Wilson-Raybould had come to him. "I do question whether or not it would have been wise for her to occupy that space and maybe come up with some solutions, but it is a hard situation". "I have taken - and will continue to take - many lessons from these recent days and few weeks". Asked, for example, whether officials from his office, in the context of a criminal matter, had raised concerns about winning re-election - a specific allegation made by Wilson-Raybould - the prime minister dodged and weaved.

"I said to her that I was preoccupied by the number of jobs involved in in this, in Quebec and obviously across the country".

Moe said there have been thousands of jobs lost in the energy sector while Trudeau's government has championed a carbon tax and a bill that would change how environmental assessments are done. "There was never any inappropriate pressure". The corollary to that view is that Wilson-Raybould had to be moved, somewhere, to set an example, pour encourager les autres.

While Wilson-Raybould did tell him she had decided not to intervene in the case, he says he asked her to reconsider and she agreed to do so. "We're at a time where Canadians are anxious about what they see in the news from around the world, the cynicism around our institutions, the polarization in our politics", he said.

"There were detailed conversations on a broad range of things that were discussed and laid bare in the various testimonies that we heard over the past weeks", Trudeau responded.

"What I can tell you is my team and everyone in this government always remains focused on how we make sure that we're protecting jobs and building a better future for Canadians and doing so in a way that protects our institutions", he added.
