Kale ranked eighth on the 2009 Dirty Dozen, the a year ago for which there was testing data.

The report, released on Wednesday, used data from the United States Department of Agriculture to analyze which fruits and veggies are the most and least contaminated.

Several fruits and vegetables were found with relatively few pesticides, placing them on EWG's "Clean 15" list.

"More than 92% of kale samples had two or more pesticide residues detected, and a single sample could contain up to 18 different residues", the report read.

She never went into specifics of how many servings it would take before there was an issue caused by pesticides.

In a new report, it was revealed that almost 70 percent of produce sold in the United States are contaminated with pesticide residues. When organic versions are unavailable or not affordable, EWG advises consumers to continue eating fresh produce, even if conventionally grown. "Fruits and vegetables are an important part of everyone's diet, and when it comes to some conventionally grown produce items, such as kale, choosing organic may be a better option".

One of these pesticides includes Dacthal, or DCPA, which has been classified by the Environmental Protection Agency as a possible human carcinogen since 1995, and has been banned for use in Europe since 2009.

However, strawberries were the worst offenders, with nearly all of the samples - 99 percent - found to have residue of at least one pesticide.

Carla Burns, EWG Research Analyst, explained: "The health benefits of a diet rich in fruits and vegetables outweigh the risks of pesticide exposure".

Strawberries were named the most contaminated produce in EWG's "Dirty Dozen" list for 2019, followed by spinach, kale, nectarines, apples, grapes, peaches, cherries, pears tomatoes, celery and potatoes.

Peer-reviewed research has shown that the author's Dirty Dozen list recommendation to substitute organic forms of produce for conventional forms did not result in a decrease in consumer risk, because residues are so low on conventionally grown produce, if present at all.

The odds of developing cancer from the amount of pesticides eaten in an average lifetime are less than one in a million, according to a review of many studies by the US National Library of Medicine at the National Institute of Health.

Less than 1 percent of avocados and sweet corn samples had detectable pesticides and more than 70 percent of Clean Fifteen samples had none.

In fact, on the Clean Fifteen list, a mere six percent of samples had residue of two or more pesticides.

The report is based on more than 40,900 fruit and vegetable samples tested by the Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Kale might be the trendy vegetable these days, but an annual study by a nonprofit environmental group warns it might be less healthy than you think.
