Xi meeting next month? Officials on both sides in talks

US sends 70 questions to WTO about China's subsidies

Liu He, China's chief trade negotiator, met Wednesday with US negotiators led by Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer at the Executive Office building next to the White House to continue discussions over Washington's long-standing complaints that Beijing forces USA companies to transfer their technology advances to Chinese firms and that it limits access to China's vast market.

The core of the US allegations against China is that Beijing systematically steals trade secrets, forces foreign companies to hand over technology as the price of access to the Chinese market and subsidizes its own tech companies.

Chinese officials are in Washington, D.C., this week for negotiations with top USA officials as the world's top two economies seek and end their trade dispute.

"Meetings are going well with good intent and spirit on both sides", Mr. Trump tweeted. The second of two days of talks are scheduled for Thursday.

Meanwhile, Mr Trump, a self-described "Tariff Man", rejected a previous proposal from Beijing to resolve the dispute with increased purchases of U.S. goods.

"China's representatives and I are trying to do a complete deal, leaving nothing unresolved on the table", he wrote.

He says: "All of the many problems are being discussed and will be hopefully resolved". Barring a deal before that deadline, tariffs on $200 billion in Chinese goods are set to jump to 25 percent, from 10 percent, on March 2.

Trump, meanwhile, has seen his public approval ratings battered by the partial government shutdown and is said to worry about the tariff war's impact upon USA financial markets.

A Chinese delegation is in Washington this week to discuss the broad strokes of an agreement to end the trade war the two countries have fighting for almost a year.

President Donald Trump seemed optimistic ahead of an Oval Office meeting with Chinese officials for tariff negotiations ahead of a March 1 deadline in a flurry of tweets Thursday.

Trump's steel and aluminum tariffs affect most countries, including China, with the notable exceptions of Argentina and Australia.

They're coming to the White House for a meeting with Trump on Thursday afternoon.

The US President also addressed the ongoing trade talks between Washington and Beijing.

The report also said that the law could help attract more foreign investment to China, protect foreign investors' legal rights and interests, and provide a favorable business environment.

With just about one month to go before the U.S.

As part of the standoff between the world's two biggest economies, Washington imposed tariffs on $250 billion in Chinese imports.

The president has often complained about the USA trade deficit with China - $335 billion in 2017 and on pace to surpass that for 2018.

Among the priorities in the current talks are protection of U.S. intellectual property, the forced transfer of USA technology through joint ventures, and enforcement mechanisms to verify that China follows through on any promised changes. "Those are separate issues", Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin told United States media ahead of the talks.

Last year, United States sanctions on another Chinese telecoms company, ZTE, sent waves through the trade negotiations, which produced no breakthrough.
