Univision: Anchor Jorge Ramos, team members freed in Venezuela

Univision lead anchor Jorge Ramos and his crew detained briefly then released by Maduro regime in Venezuela equipment confiscated

According to a tweet by the network's US president Daniel Coronell, the team was detained and their equipment confiscated after Ramos asked combative questions to Maduro.

Ramos, a veteran anchor born in Mexico, told Mexican broadcaster Televisa that Maduro became annoyed when they showed him a video of young Venezuelans eating from a garbage truck, a sign of widespread food shortages across the country.

Separately, a video recorded by the Univision team and shared via Twitter said that while Ultreras was in Venezuela, members of an armed pro-government militia held him at gunpoint as he was traveling to Caracas from the western state of Táchira where he had been covering the Colombia-Venezuela border. "They think the interview is theirs, not ours". They took all our cellphones, including one that isn't mine.

Ramos said he had brought up opposition leader and self-declared interim president Juan Guaido's charges that Maduro has effectively usurped power because, Guaido argues, Maduro won re-election past year through fraud. "They were interrogating us, they put us in a security room, turned off the lights... kept a lot of our personal things". In January, two French journalists were held for filming outside Miraflores presidential palace. Maduro resides at the palace.

"The crew of six Univision Noticias journalists headed by Jorge Ramos was released after being held at the Miraflores Palace for almost three hours on the orders of Nicolas Maduro", the network added.

"Immediately afterward one of his ministers, Jorge Rodriguez, came to tell us the interview isn't authorized".

"Nicolás Maduro and his security apparatus have no right to hold journalists, or their equipment, hostage - no matter how much they may dislike a line of questioning", said Central and South America Coordinator Natalie Southwick in NY.

Univision did not respond to interview requests.

Ramos earlier stated Maduro "had not liked" his questions about "the lack of democracy in Venezuela, torture, political prisoners, and the humanitarian crisis". At least four people were killed and hundreds more were injured. Bernie Sanders stopped short of calling Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro a "dictator", saying "there are still democratic operations taking place" in the war-torn country.
