Report saying joblessness reached 45-year high ‘not verified’: NITI Aayog

Big Expose on NSSO jobs data, Unemployment rate at four decade high with 6.1% in 2017-18; BJP to get cornered in Parliament

Speaking about the report, he said, "The government had not released the data (on jobs) as it is still being processed".

The survey has become a political issue after the acting chairman and another member of the body that reviewed the job data resigned saying there was delay in its release.

This data was collected by the NSSO between July 2017 and June 2018 - and is the first official survey that at the country's employment situation after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the demonetisation of high-value currency notes in November 2016.

The unemployment rate in India has reached its highest in 45 years, according to a report in the Business Standard newspaper that cited an official survey withheld by the government.

This was the highest unemployment rate in India in the last 20 years.

Last year, the government had adopted a similar tone and completely disregarded a report of a sub-committee of the NSC headed by N.R. Bhanumurthy, a professor at the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy, saying the methodology for calculation of the back-series had not been finalised.

Modi's ambitious Make-in-India project to lift the share of domestic manufacturing from 17 percent of GDP to about 25 percent and create jobs for an estimated 1.2 million youth entering the marker failed to take off. "This report was released for approval because this is a standalone report and it does not require any additional verification with any sources". We need better quality of data, more frequent and more accurate data to do such analysis. "I do not want to comment on it", Pravin Srivastava, India's chief statistician, told Reuters. "Comparing the employment numbers for 2017-18 with 2011-12 numbers may not be correct", he said, adding that the methodology and sample sizes were different. "If it is a draft report, it can not be said that the government is not releasing the data", Rajiv Kumar said.

"You can't be growing at 7.2 per cent and say no jobs are being created".

The Indian economy has been expanding at a rate of over 7 per cent annually, one of the fastest in the world.

The gloomy jobs data could be awkward for PM Modi's government to explain with a general election looming and opinion polls already showing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party unlikely to keep its parliamentary majority. Unemployment is at its highest in 45 years.

Earlier this month, the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy, a leading independent think-tank, said the country lost as many as 11 million jobs past year.
