Trump White House sought strike plans against Iran

Pentagon officials ‘rattled’ by Trump White House request for military options to attack Iran: report

Bolton, who has long advocated for the U.S. to bomb Iran and even institute regime change against its theocratic rulers, requested options to strike Iran after Tehran-linked militants mortared, unsuccessfully, a USA embassy in Baghdad, the Wall Street Journal first reported Sunday.

Although the Pentagon obeyed the request by the council, the Journal reported, it is unknown whether or not the plans for striking Iran were ever fully developed or even provided to the White House. The shells-launched by a group aligned with Iran-landed in an open lot and harmed no one.

State Department Secretary Mike Pompeo did not comment on the story when asked about it by reporters and a State Department spokeswoman declined to comment.

Garrett Marquis, a spokesman for the National Security Council, said the body "coordinates policy and provides the president with options to anticipate and respond to a variety of threats". Bolton also told CNN that month that the United States would hold Iran responsible for the actions of militias in Iraq, Iran's close ally. The newspaper reported that the request sparked deep concern among Pentagon and State Department officials.

In talks with other administration officials, Bolton has made it clear he personally supports regime change in Iran, a position he championed before joining Trump's administration, people familiar with the discussions said. The US blamed Iran for the attack, despite Tehran's categorical denial.

According to the publication, it remains unclear whether President Donald Trump himself knew about the request, whether the Pentagon ultimately delivered military options to the White House, and if concrete attack plans against the Islamic Republic were actually formulated. The Iranians could do plenty of damage to us if they chose to retaliate.

Washington withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal in May previous year and re-imposed batches of sanctions on Tehran.

Bolton's request reflects the administration's more confrontational approach toward Tehran, one that he has pushed since taking up the post last April.

The agreement was aimed at preventing Iran developing nuclear weapons.
