Trump to address nation about ‘crisis’ at wall

Donald Trump warns shutdown 'could last years'

Journal is reporting that Trump is looking for ways to end the shutdown without it looking like the Democrats won.

Large chunks of the federal government shut down on December 22 over Trump's demand that a bill to keep the federal government operational include more than $5 billion to pay for a wall along the border with Mexico.

Trump tweets that he will address the nation at 9 p.m.

The funding stalemate has shut down a fourth of the federal government, impacting 800,000 employees, either furloughed or working without pay.

Calling Sunday negotiations with Democrats "productive", the president wrote on Twitter later in the evening, "We are now planning a Steel Barrier rather than concrete". They "don't like concrete, so we'll give them steel", he has said.

Pressed about the terrorism claims during an impromptu Rose Garden news conference last week, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen pointed to another statistic: that more than 3,000 "special interest aliens" have tried to enter the U.S. through the southern border, suggesting those individuals "have travel patterns that are identified as terrorist travel patterns or they have known or suspected ties to terrorism".

That's prompted an effort inside the White House to develop plans for higher-profile messaging events that would allow Trump to underscore what he says is a border crisis.

"I have not discussed the border wall with President Trump, and do not support him on the issue, " said Jimmy Carter.

Pence said Trump also invited Democrats back to the White House to respond to its latest proposal to resolve the standoff over legislation to fund the government. A Democratic aide said there was no progress. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has called the wall "immoral" and refuses to budge on providing taxpayers' funding for it.

Among the Republicans expressing concern was Sen. But the Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican from Kentucky, said he will not take up legislation the president doesn't support.

"Let's get those reopened while the negotiations continue", Collins said on NBC's "Meet the Press".

Over the weekend, the federal agency tasked with guaranteeing US airport security acknowledged an increase in the number of its employees calling off work.

"They're looking at it and the president is considering it", Pence said during a media briefing alongside homeland security secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and Office of Management and Budget acting director Russell Vought in Washington. "Great. Come to the table", she said. Sanders, for example, falsely claimed on Sunday that "nearly 4,000 known or suspected terrorists come into our country illegally", even though the overwhelming majority of those individuals are blocked from entering the United States at airports.

Trump reaffirmed that he would consider declaring a national emergency to circumvent Congress and spend money as he saw fit.

Trump visited the southern border last March.
