Thai police say they won't deport Saudi woman

Will Be Killed If Sent Back: Saudi Woman Stopped From Entering Thailand

"My life is in danger".

If forced back, she told the New York Times, "they will kill me".

But Alqunun claims the assertion her family lives in Kuwait is a lie.

Phil Robertson, deputy Asia director for Human Rights Watch, said: "Given Saudi Arabia's long track record of looking the other way in so-called honour violence incidents, her worry that she could be killed if returned cannot be ignored".

"UNHCR has been following developments closely and immediately sought access from the Thai authorities to meet with Rahaf to assess her need for global protection", Fleming wrote on Twitter.

Earlier a Thai court dismissed an injunction to block Qunun's deportation, said human rights lawyer Nadthasiri Bergman, who filed the request.

"She is now under the sovereignty of Thailand; no one and no embassy can force her to go anywhere", Surachate said according to BBC.

The UNHCR representative in Thailand, Giuseppe de Vincentiis, said it could take "several days" to run through her case. "We will not send anyone to die".

Mr Surachate said he would meet Saudi diplomats to clarify Thailand's decision.

Asylum seekers are typically deported or wait years to be resettled in third countries.

Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun arrived at Bangkok's main airport from Kuwait over the weekend.

How did the stand-off start?

Gen Surachate said he was unaware of any passport seizure and it is unclear why Ms Mohammed al-Qunun would need a Thai visa if she was in transit to Australia and had an Australian visa.

The Saudi embassy in Bangkok has issued a statement denying its role in holding her, and said Thai authorities stopped her for "violating the law".

Saudi embassy official refuted the allegations and said they did not have any authority to hold her at the airport, and added it was done at the discretion of Thai officials who stopped her as she did not have any return ticket or hotel booking to support her tourist visa.

Qunun posted a video on Twitter on Monday of her barricading her hotel door with a table and a mattress. She tweeted Monday that a friend would carry on posting to her account if she was taken away or denied access to it.

"I shared my story and my pictures on social media and my father is so angry because I did this". 'I'm shouting out for help of humanity, ' she wrote on her Twitter feed, where she's been documenting her situation in Arabic and English.

Saudi culture and guardianship policy requires women to have permission from a male relative to work, travel, marry, and even get some medical treatment.

Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun's tweets are being translated and shared online.

She has asked for asylum from governments around the world.

She was denied entry to the country and was initially supposed to be put on a flight home.

Why are there fears for her welfare?

The Saudi legal system views abandoning Islam as a crime punishable by death.

The teenager claims she was abducted and had her passport confiscated by Saudi diplomatic staff in Thailand, despite having a visa to travel to Australia. She said she was once locked in a room for six months because she had cut her hair in a way that her family did not approve of.

Qunun, however, told AFP that she was only travelling in the Gulf state.
