Rod Rosenstein Expected To Leave Role

William Barr, President Trump's nominee to be the next attorney general, told Republican Sen.

William Barr was scheduled to meet with at least three key Senate Judiciary Committee Republicans ahead of his confirmation hearing scheduled for next week.

At a news conference in December, Rosenstein said that Mueller's investigation would be "handled appropriately" no matter who is overseeing it.

Early this morning ABC News broke the story that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein would soon resign as the second in command at the Department of Justice. Also, Rosenstein told senators during his 2017 confirmation hearing that he would not remain in his post if he believed that he was being pressured to influence any investigations.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Wednesday Rosenstein had "always planned to roughly stay around two years".

"My guess is that he is making room for the new attorney general to build a team that he wants around him", she added.

Democratic Senator Patty Murray told Reuters, "Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein did a good job". His interim successor, acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker, consulted with Justice Department officials but ultimately decided not to recuse himself. If confirmed by the Senate, Barr will oversee Mueller's probe.

Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein has no concrete plans to depart and will stay on to help with the transition, said the person who asked not to be named. Rosenstein, who had written a memo supporting the dismissal of former FBI Director James Comey based on the premise that Comey had treated Hillary Clinton unfairly during the 2016 campaign, had more recently clashed with Trump after reports he made comments about overthrowing Trump or secretly recording him shortly before Mueller's appointment.

But Rosenstein's anticipated departure may come before the penultimate step in the Trump-Russia probe: the decision on whether to make that report public or turn it over to Congress.

"As attorney general, his job will be to receive Mr. Mueller's report and determine what to do with it", Graham said.

The attorney general pick also bashed Mueller's overall approach to law, which he condemned as "grossly irresponsible" with "potentially disastrous implications" for the presidency.

But he also has been a target of President Donald Trump, who past year tweeted out a picture of Rosenstein behind bars. Also, Barr wrote an unsolicited memo to the Justice Department previous year critiquing Mueller's investigation into whether the president sought to obstruct justice by firing James Comey as FBI director.

He has accused the investigation of being led by "Democrat loyalists".
