Poland arrests Chinese businessman, Pole on spying charges

Hmmm: Huawei exec arrested for espionage in Poland

Counter-espionage officers in Poland have arrested a Chinese manager working for the tech giant Huawei, and a former Polish intelligence officer who had also worked at the mobile phone company Orange.

The offices of both Huawei and Orange Polska have been searched by Poland's Internal Security Agency.

Huawei told Reuters it was aware of the situation, but had no immediate comment.

The US and other Western countries have been wary of trusting Huawei, and have raised concerns the company's telecoms equipment could be used by the Chinese government for spying.

The move is the latest setback for Huawei, which saw the arrest of the daughter of the firm's founder in Canada and United States efforts to blacklist the company internationally over security concerns. "We have no comment for the time being", Huawei said in a statement.

The Wall Street Journal reports that a Huawei executive has been arrested in Poland after being discovered as a spy for the Chinese government.

"It's not the beginning of this case but it's also not the end", he said.

The detainees were charged with Article 130 paragraph 1 of espionage against the Republic of Poland.

The pair are set to remain in custody for at least three months and apparently face up to ten years in prison.

Polish state TV, which is close to the government, identified the Chinese man as Weijing W., saying he was a director in Poland at Huawei.

It said, while at the Internal Security Agency, he was involved in building a mobile communications system for top Polish officials, and he was sacked in 2011 amid a major corruption scandal.

The FTC's argument that Qualcomm is allegedly harming competition, however, has frustrated some conservatives, who say not only does it appear the independent agency is favoring Chinese interests over American businesses, but the FTC's case goes against the ideas of free-market capitalism.

Nonetheless, intelligence bods recommended banning the use of the kit, and official blocks are in place for state-funded projects in the US, Australia and New Zealand.

Orange Poland told the AP on Friday it was cooperating with Polish security services in the case and had "handed over belongings of one of our employees" in Tuesday's search of its offices. The company said it abides by applicable laws wherever it operates and expects employees to do the same.

Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of Huawei and the daughter of founder Ren Zhengfei, was arrested in Canada last month at the request of the US government.

Canada arrested Meng Wanzhou, the daughter of the company founder, as she transited through the country.

That allegation has not been proven publicly and the company denies any link to China's government.

This refusal to use Huawei's products come from the belief that doing so would pose "significant risks to national security" and potentially provide sensitive information back to Beijing through "backdoors" installed in Huawei products.
