US probe of China's Huawei includes bank fraud accusations

The reason for Wanzhou Meng's arrest was not immediately

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has defended the decision by Canadian authorities to execute a United States extradition request and detain a Huawei executive.

"The appropriate authorities took the decisions in this case without any political involvement or interference", Trudeau told media in Montreal on Thursday.

The Chinese government said Meng had broken no United States or Canadian laws and demanded Canada "immediately correct the mistake" and release her. It was the same day that US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Argentina for the G20 summit, where they agreed a 90-truce in their trade war.

A profile of Huawei's chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou is displayed on a Huawei computer at a store in Beijing on December 6, 2018.

The Virginia Democrat said in a statement on the arrest that there's "ample evidence" to suggest Huawei is not independent of the Chinese government and Communist Party. "The company believes the Canadian and US legal systems will ultimately reach a just conclusion", the statement continued.

It added that it complies with all laws and regulations where it operates, including worldwide sanctions. Meng...to face unspecified charges in the Eastern District of NY, when she was transferring flights in Canada.

US authorities have been probing Huawei, one of the world's largest makers of telecommunications network equipment, since at least 2016 over allegations that it shipped USA -derived tech products to Iran and other countries in violation of US export and sanctions laws, sources told Reuters in April.

The company is one of the largest telecommunications equipment and services providers in the world, recently passing Apple to become the second-biggest smartphone maker after Samsung.

"China has entertained hopes that they could split us away from the U.S.in the Trump era", he said.

One congressman said companies that had used Huawei equipment reported "numerous allegations" of unexpected behavior, including routers that were sending large data packs to China.

"This reminds the Chinese, and ourselves, that we are part of an worldwide order backed by the U.S".

"At the request of the US side, the Canadian side arrested a Chinese citizen not violating any American or Canadian law", the Chinese Embassy in Canada said on Thursday.

David Mulroney, a former Canadian ambassador to China, says that while he doesn't want to overstate the possibility of a Canadian being jailed, China will be looking for ways to strike back.

If Meng fights extradition, her case could go on for years, lawyers said, pointing to examples like Lai Changxing, a Chinese businessman who fled to Canada after he was implicated in a bribery case and fought extradition to China for 12 years.

The U.S. launched a criminal probe into Huawei's dealings in Iran in April.

Most countries, even close USA allies such as Canada, Britain and Germany, have not made any moves against Huawei, arguing they have sufficient procedures to test equipment for security. Such requests must be made through the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of International Affairs (OIA).

Suspicions over Huawei's links to the Chinese government have made the company a target for suspicion and the United States has led the charge to ban its products and services.

Several other past and present Skycom directors appear to have connections to Huawei. "It certainly raises concerns about the future of talks.this is certainly another step-back in the ongoing trade negotiations".

"It has been clear for some time that Huawei, like ZTE, poses a threat to our national security", he said. "They will retaliate and China will take hostages", he said.

"China has the means, opportunity, and motive to use telecommunications companies for malicious purposes", a government report said.

Meng's arrest comes as Ottawa and Beijing have been engaged in exploratory talks on a free trade agreement for the past two years, which would be the first deal of its kind between China and a western country.

Trump has "pulled out all the stops" to hamper Chinese ambitions to challenge the U.S.as a technology leader, Lam said.
