United States to suspend nuclear pact over alleged violations

U.S. signals it will suspend nuclear treaty with Russia after NATO finding

"Russia's reply has been consistent: deny any wrongdoing, demand more information, and issue baseless counter-accusations", Pompeo said. It is simple: "in that case we will also do this".

"They can not be intercepted by any present anti-missile defences".

"The statements issued today by both Secretary Pompeo and the NATO Foreign Ministers that Russian Federation is in material breach of the INF Treaty are a clear indication that our European allies have joined with us in recognition of how grave the threat from Russian Federation has become", Cheney said in a statement.

Western powers say a Russian missile system developed and fielded over the last five years breaches the 1987 Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty.

It has prevented the deployment of United States nuclear-tipped missiles to Europe since its inception.

He also insisted that the USA had provided "no evidence" that Russian Federation had violated the treaty, despite NATO's determination.

"Groundless accusations are again being repeated", foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said, after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo declared Russian Federation in "material breach" of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty.

"The United States declares today it has found Russian Federation in material breach of the treaty and will suspend our obligations as a remedy effective in 60 days unless Russian Federation returns to full and verifiable compliance", he said.

"No evidence to support this American position has ever been presented to us".

According to a leaked memo published by the Washington Post, Bolton has ordered the Pentagon to "develop and deploy ground-launched missiles at the earliest possible date".

"Its range makes it a direct menace to Europe", Pompeo said of the missiles, which also are called Novator 9M729, after a meeting with his North Atlantic Treaty Organisation counterparts. The U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also said that his country is suspending its obligations under the agreement.

"We will answer in a reciprocal way: if the United States leaves the INF Treaty and deploys medium-range and short-range missiles in Europe, Russia will increase the number of such missiles in the European part of its territory", Vladimir Dzhabarov, deputy head of the worldwide affairs committee of Russia's upper house, was cited by Sputnik news agency as saying. Otherwise, he said, the United States would quit the 1987 accord, considered a milestone in reducing the threat of a nuclear war in Europe.

US Cruise and Pershing missiles deployed in Britain and Germany were removed as a result of the treaty while the Soviet Union pulled back its SS-20s out of European range.

"I regret that we will now most likely see the end of the INF treaty, but at the same time we don't have any other alternative than to react in the way we do". Our military and our scientists started to work hard on missiles that can overcome ABM system. However, NATO later determined that Russian Federation had acted in violation of the treaty.

"As military professionals, you should understand that not the United States territory, but the countries hosting USA systems with intermediate-range and shorter-range missiles will become targets for Russia's retaliatory steps", Gerasimov said.
