United States government shutdown to extend into next week after Senate adjourns

Short of an unexpected and long shot deal before then, it will be up to Trump and Pelosi to negotiate an end to the partial shutdown After the new Congress is sworn in on January 3.

House lawmakers are being told not to expect further votes this week, all but ensuring the shutdown will enter a second week and stretch toward the new year. The House and Senate gaveled in for a perfunctory session Thursday, but quickly adjourned without action.

"First of all, the fact ... that he says, "We're going to build a wall with cement, and Mexico's going to pay for it" while he's already backed off of the cement - now he's down to, I think, a beaded curtain or something, I'm not sure where he is", Pelosi said.

Although both bodies of Congress returned to work on Thursday, the brief session signaled that little, if any, progress had been made toward settling a spending bill stalemate between Congress and the White House, which is demanding $5 billion to fund US President Donald Trump's vision of a border wall along the US' southern border with Mexico.

Just 35 percent of those surveyed in the Reuters/Ipsos poll said they backed including money for the wall in a congressional spending bill.

Virginia Democratic Sen. Mark Warner called Trump's comments "outrageous". "Instead, he is literally tweeting the words "poor me" while holding dedicated professionals hostage, creating unnecessary stress and financial hardships for their families, undermining their work product and treating them as a chip on a giant poker table".

Senate adjourns until next week; no border deal
US in a 'destructive Trump Shutdown' over $5B border wall

Wednesday was the first scheduled workday for federal employees that was affected by the shutdown. No votes are expected until next week, and even that's not guaranteed. "Please stay tuned to future updates for more information".

According to the Associated Press, around 420,000 people are working without pay, while another 380,000 have been put on furlough.

Roberts said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, of NY, and other Democrats need to come up with an "appropriate number" and language for border security funding that Trump will sign. At some point the Democrats not wanting to make a deal will cost our Country more money than the Border Wall we are all talking about. At Trump's urging, the House approved that package and inserted the $5.7 billion he had requested. Republicans have only 51 seats, so they will need to try to persuade some Democrats to back the measure. That jump-started negotiations between Congress and the White House, but the deadline came and went without a deal.

That's important. In past shutdowns, public sentiment - anger and disgust - has played a big role in pushing the parties to compromise. Chuck Schumer of New York, left, speaks to members of the media outside the West Wing of the White House in Washington, Dec. 11, 2018. The shutdown went into effect at midnight on 21 December. Those being furloughed include 52,000 workers at the Internal Revenue Service and almost everyone at NASA. National parks are closed, though some states are maintaining operations at the most popular parks. The remaining 80 percent is fully funded and is unaffected by the shutdown. State highway workers were sent to the area Monday to erect "no parking" signs along US 70 outside the monument.

Previously, Trump claimed that "many" furloughed workers were fine not getting paid during the shutdown as long as it meant that Trump could secure more funding for the border wall.

Earlier this week, Trump claimed that numerous federal workers were OK with the shutdown.
