Huawei executive arrested by Canadian officials at USA request

US stocks slumped at the start of US trading following European and Asian shares lower as concern resurfaced that trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies are far from resolved

In June, Canada's Globe and Mail newspaper reported that USA lawmakers warned the Canadian government that Huawei posed a major cybersecurity risk.

Huawei is playing a straight bat over Meng's arrest.

News of Meng's arrest provoked an immediate protest from the Chinese embassy in Canada, demanding the US and its neighbor "rectify wrongdoings" and free Meng.

USA prosecutors in NY have been investigating whether Huawei violated US sanctions in relation to Iran.

"The Chinese side has lodged stern representations with the United States and Canadian side, and urged them to immediately correct the wrongdoing and restore the personal freedom of Ms Meng Wanzhou".

"The company has been provided very little information regarding the charges and is not aware of any wrongdoing by Ms. Meng".

A Huawei spokesperson did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this year that USA authorities are investigating whether Chinese tech giant Huawei violated sanctions on Iran.

"Wanzhou Meng was arrested in Vancouver on December 1st".

The ministry added it could not provide further details due to a publication ban that was sought by Meng.

The Canadian Department of Justice said Meng Wanzhou, who also goes by the name Sabrina Meng, was collared by police in Vancouver over the weekend at the request of Uncle Sam, which hopes to haul her into a court in the States.

BT is also removing Huawei equipment from the core of its existing 3G and 4G networks, the BBC reported.

Huawei later said the HP equipment was ultimately not provided to Iran either by Huawei or Skycom, Reuters said.

U.S. media have reported that the United States is investigating Huawei for potential violations of USA sanctions against Iran.

Huawei is one of the largest makers of telecommunications network equipment in the world and is thought to have been shipping products from America to the Middle Eastern country since at least 2016.

That same month Washington barred Huawei rival ZTE Corp. from exporting USA technology in a separate case over exports to Iran and North Korea.

The Wall Street Journal notes that USA authorities want to bring Meng to federal court in the Eastern District of NY.

American officials have talked to their counterparts in Germany, Italy, and Japan - countries where Huawei products are widely used.

In May, the Pentagon banned the sale of Huawei phones on military bases.

The move has been taken with a greater sense of urgency since internet providers are gearing up to purchase massive amounts of hardware for the much-anticipated 5G upgrade.

Huawei's comments came in response to the FCC's notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) for Protecting Against National Security Threats to the Communications Supply Chain Through FCC Programs.

Massey University, which partnered with Huawei to upgrade wireless infrastructure, says its watching developments closely.
