DHS Secretary Nielsen visits border after child's death

The boy went to hospital but died in the early hours of Christmas Day

It was the second death of a child in the agency's care this month.

In a statement, the agency said the eight-year-old had displayed "signs of potential illness" on Monday. "They need medical attention; they need us looking out for them". The child, along with his father, was then taken to a holding facility at a highway checkpoint. The Defense Department has been asked to provide additional medical professionals.

His Democratic opponents have seized on the deaths of the two Guatemalan children to attack his policies.

The agents later checked on the boy and noticed that his condition had worsened, at which point they chose to take him back to the hospital where he later died.

After experiencing nausea and vomiting, the child was taken back to the hospital, where he soon died, according to CBP.

The federal agency is under attack after Felipe Gómez Alonzo, a young Guatemalan boy, died on Monday evening while being detained at a center in New Mexico.

Immigration advocates and human rights groups sharply criticised CBP in the wake of Felipe's death. He had recently sold land and earned about $6 a day, but that was not enough to support his family, so he chose to take out a loan and travel to the US, she said.

Several lawmakers signed a letter Friday seeking to have the Department of Homeland Security and Customs and Border Protection open an investigation into the death of an 8-year-old Guatemalan boy while he was in US custody.

His cause of death is not yet known and an investigation has been opened, officials said.

"We're overcrowded, understaffed. We don't have the manpower to deal with this crisis. You would think an American president could walk and chew gum at the same time", wrote caroljs. They gave the boy an order for medicines and released him. If they complain, you flag it.

We want to hear from you. "Those are the guys that are getting hurt". "They said they could pass with the children", Catarina Gomez Lucas, the dead boy's 21-year-old stepsister, told the Associated Press.

The deaths have triggered finger-pointing between the White House and Democrats over border security, and allegations that the Trump administration is endangering migrant children by detaining them for days in cells meant as temporary way stations for adults.

There, he was diagnosed with a cold and a fever and given medication. His cause of death, however, has not determined as of Thursday.

Customs and Border Protection is part of the Department of Homeland Security.

An 8-year-old boy from Guatemala died on Christmas Day while in US Border Control custody.

And according to U.S. law, even some who enter illegally can seek defensive asylum. Before this month, there were six deaths in CBP custody in 2018, and none of those were children, DHS officials said. Trump said the shutdown will last until the funds for border security are guaranteed.

Some children detained in more remote areas were re-screened by emergency medical technicians or Border Patrol agents, officials said.

"This is a tragic loss", CBP Commissioner Kevin K. McAleenan said.

During a subsequent welfare check, agents at the facility noticed the child's condition and transported him to the hospital.
