Blitzboks beaten by Fiji in Dubai extra-time thriller

Rugby Canada signs new equipment deal with Canterbury rebrands with new logo Article Image 0

"We need to be better - we need to be great".

I was really curious as to why they were all saying well done and when I realised why, it was like "Wow!".

It looked like it would Zimbabwe's day as Tafadzwa Chitokwindo, who had been tipped by World Rugby to be one of the players to watch in the tournament, lived up to his billing to finish off a brilliant team effort.

It was a similar story in the bronze medal match as Australia led England 14-5 at the break through two tries to speedster Lachlan Anderson, before Harry Glover went over after full time as once again victory was snatched from the Aussies. After battling past Samoa, the Blitzboks' ill-discipline let them down in their final pool game on Friday as they slipped to defeat against Argentina. New Zealand had a choice of scrum or lineout and chose a quick throw in. Canada responded with a lung-busting run from Julia Greenshields that cut the New Zealand advantage to 19-14 with just over four minutes remaining.

Speaking of his surprise match-winner Manenti added: "The two young girls (17-year-old) Sariah Paki and Lily just went from strength to strength and the more I played them the better they got". The All Blacks Sevens put in 42 tackles in total and Scott Gregory's final turnover was greeted by roars of delight.

The USA had knocked out Fiji in the quarter-finals and Australia in the semis.

Moments before, the United States of America knocked on and the ball went out. Barrett was then the hero, eventually crossing in the left corner after a chaotic finish, with the US dummying at a penalty and feeding the ball out wide. The Australians had led 17-12 until Tomasin and then Barrett found their way over the line.

But the English were too good for a sloppy Blitzboks, scoring four tries as they thrashed the defending Series and Dubai champions 22-5 in the quarterfinals. From the opening exchanges England dominated proceedings with captain Tom Mitchell powering over from close range for the first try. Phil Burgess wrapped up the win after intercepting a Rosko Specman pass, before South Africa scored a consolation try through Selvyn Davids.

While Knewstubb was sin-binned in the second half, America finally scored but New Zealand prevailed 24-7.

The Black Ferns Sevens will face Russian Federation in the first quarter-final of the Dubai Rugby Sevens at 6pm (NZT) after winning all their pool play matches on day one of the tournament.
