U.S. midterms: Blow for Donald Trump as Republicans lose control of Congress

In big test for Donald Trump presidency mid-term elections in US today

Democrats seized the House majority from President Donald Trump's Republican Party on Tuesday in a suburban revolt that threatened what's left of the president's governing agenda.

They had promised a "blue wave" sweeping them back into control of Congress.

Blue-collar voters and rural America embraced his aggressive talk and stances.

While a Democratic victory was far from guaranteed, the party had been viewed as a slight favorite to win the House on Election Day. The Senate, however, remains with the Republican Party, which may even extend its slim 51-49 majority, reported The New York Times as counting of votes continued.

First on the list, according to the likely Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, is a package of government ethics and election reform measures.

The result upends the balance of power in Washington, where Trump has enjoyed an easy ride from Republican dominance of both houses of Congress since his shock election in 2016.

Actually passing many bills, however, will be hard because the GOP will fall well short of the 60 votes needed to break through Democratic filibusters, procedural delays that kill legislation.

Democrats boasted record diversity on ballots. As of early Wednesday, the party was on track to capture the House of Representatives by a healthy margin, flipping more than 30 GOP-held seats and winning the total vote by about 9 percentage points.

Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib were elected the first Muslim women to the Congress for the first time in the country's history.

Women voted considerably more in favor of their congressional Democratic candidate - with fewer than 4 in 10 voting for the Republican, according to VoteCast, a nationwide survey of more than 113,000 voters and about 20,000 nonvoters - conducted for The Associated Press by NORC at the University of Chicago. Democratic incumbents also prevailed in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, Midwestern states that Trump carried narrowly two years ago.

Tuesday's elections also tested the strength of a Trump-era political realignment defined by evolving divisions among voters by race, gender, and especially education.

Later in her speech, Pelosi evoked the Founding Fathers: "The founders could never have imagined how vast our country would become, how many we would be, how different we would be from each other". Democrat Jared Polis in Colorado became the first openly gay man elected governor. But one of the Democrats, Lyman Hoffman, joined the Republican leadership.

Although an outsider in 2016, Mr Trump now leads the ultra-right conservatives in the Republican Party.

"I'm here tonight to tell you that fight is not over", she told supporters, before requesting donations to fund a possible recount.

Democrats have won at least 17 Republican-held districts, a significant down payment on the net gain of 23 seats they need to win the House.

Some hurt worse than others.

"I am extremely happy with the economy", Gerlock said.

About four in 10 voters choose health care as the most important issue facing the country, and seven in 10 say the nation's health-care system needs major changes, the exit polling shows.

The nationwide survey indicated that almost two-thirds said Trump was a reason for their vote.

Most Democratic candidates in tight races stayed away from harsh criticism of Trump during the campaign's final stretch, focusing instead on bread-and-butter issues like maintaining insurance protections for people with pre-existing medical conditions and safeguarding the Social Security retirement and Medicare healthcare programs for senior citizens. Democratic Senate incumbents were up for re-election, for example, in North Dakota, Indiana, and Missouri - states Trump carried by nearly 25 percentage points on average two years ago.

Kobach had built a national profile as an advocate of tough immigration policies and strict voter photo ID laws.

Trump is still trusting his feel for what voters want to hear. The extraordinary USA midterm election has been a tug of war over key issues, but none has had a more dramatic impact on voters than Donald Trump, the man who isn't even on the ballot. But it's also because the midterm results may tie the GOP even closer to the President.

Several ambitious Democrats easily won re-election, including presidential prospects Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Elizabeth Warren of MA and Kirsten Gillibrand of NY. He brought his misleading attacks, his racially tinged appeals and his wild campaign style to the midterms, particularly in the closing days, and the GOP followed him there.
