Trump Defends Border Patrol's Use Of Tear Gas At The Southern Border

'Thank you President T': Trump congratulates himself as holiday break ends

An Associated Press reporter saw US agents shoot several rounds of tear gas after some migrants attempted to penetrate several points along the border.

U.S. Border Patrol fired tear gas canisters and rubber bullets at a group of migrants on Sunday, including families with young children, as hundreds tried to storm the border.

Democrats and other critics called the Trump administration's use of tear gas toward the migrants an overreaction, and blamed the administration for rejecting efforts to address larger immigration issues.

Mr McAleenan added: "As the events unfolded, quick, decisive and effective action prevented an extremely unsafe situation".

President Trump threatened to permanently close the US border with Mexico on Monday, saying he'll take the drastic action if members of a swelling migrant caravan are not deported back to their Central American homelands.

"If they're launching tear gas, it's better to head somewhere else", he said.

Rodney S. Scott, chief patrol agent for the San Diego sector, also told CNN that us officials arrested 42 people, mostly adult males, who made it into the United States.

"What I saw on the border yesterday was not people walking up to border control agents and asking to seek asylum", Scott said.

US Customs and Border Protection officers "were struck by projectiles thrown by caravan members" and "perpetrators will be prosecuted", US Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said on Twitter. I observed as the migrants, pushing baby strollers and wheelchairs with their meager belongings on their backs, streamed across the Tijuana river to the Mexican immigration offices and through fences to neighboring train tracks.

Most of the migrants stumbled back into camp in the northwestern Mexican city of Tijuana, dirty, scared and with ripped clothes. US Customs and Border Protection said on Sunday that some migrants were throwing rocks at Border Patrol agents, prompting the agents to respond with force to protect themselves.

But on Monday, the incident had left many migrants sullen, wondering whether the unrest had spoiled whatever possibilities they might have had for making asylum cases.

The groups had initially marched to the border wall from the stadium, Estadio Caliente, in protest and hope they would be permitted to enter, holding signs of U.S. -Mexico-Honduran flags, and others that read, "Donald Trump, Christ loves you", the publication reported. In response, CBP deployed additional personnel to San Ysidro, California, on Sunday in expectation of demonstrations on both sides of the border. "Congress, fund the WALL!"

Mexico's National Migration Institute said that 98 migrants were being deported after the attempted breach. One woman is seen running with her children, grasping the wrists of one child in each hand, at least one dressed in a diaper as they escape the tear gas. It is the most heavily trafficked land border in the western hemisphere. He questioned why parents were approaching the border with children at all, suggesting that some of the adults "grabbed" children to better their chances of entering the US.

Mexico City has promised to ramp up security at the border.
