Theresa May loses minister amid furious backlash to her Brexit plans

Michael Gove

After a rollercoaster week that threatened to bring an end to her premiership, May survived Friday without any further high-profile departures from her administration.

He later said that a confidence vote now might give Conservative MPs their only chance to remove May as leader before the next general election. "I am looking forward to continuing to work with all colleagues in government and in Parliament to get the best future for Britain", he told reporters mid-morning.

- 10.20am - Suella Braverman resigns as a Brexit minister.

"We have in view a deal that will work for the United Kingdom and, let no one be in any doubt, I am determined to deliver it", May said in a speech to Britain's premier business lobby, the CBI, to loud applause.

Hard Brexiters reacted negatively on Tuesday to the proposed deal and indicated that they meant to vote against it if it came to parliament.

"Our European partners, I think, also have looked over the edge of a no-deal Brexit and seen what an impact it could have on their economies".

The tentative deal triggered the resignation of two of May's cabinet secretaries - including Dominic Raab, her Brexit secretary who helped negotiate it - as well as letters from members of parliament in her own Conservative party calling for a vote of no confidence in her leadership.

Asked whether she saw herself as a "modern-day Chamberlain", she replied: "No I don't ..."

The specter of a confidence vote still looms over May.

His letter brings to 18 the tally of MPs publicly declaring they have written to Sir Graham Brady, the chair of the backbench 1922 Committee, with Westminster insiders believing the total may be near the 48 needed to trigger a vote. "Mistakes were made which shouldn't have taken place and work is ongoing to make sure those people are properly compensated".

The question of Mrs May's survival is one that the EU27 are watching closely as Tory rebels continued to attack her plan. He also said that if there were a vote, May would win. It will be a welcome back for new DWP boss Amber Rudd and Stephen Barclay, who steps into the Brexit firing line - albeit in a reduced, domestic capacity.

Barnier met ministers from the 27 European Union governments in Brussels as they try to complete a separate, non-binding "declaration" on plans for a trade and security relationship with Britain that May would agree at a summit in Brussels on Sunday.

Rudd had resigned as Home Secretary in April after admitting she "inadvertently misled" MPs over deportation targets.

Mr Vara, a former Conservative vice chairman who has served as a whip and on the frontbenches for the bulk of his career since entering Parliament in 2005, backed Remain in the 2016 referendum.

"The European Union has spun this out deliberately to try to use time against us", he told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme.

Barclay, MP for North East Cambridgeshire since 2010, is a relatively unknown face.

May has pledged to fight on, warning that toppling her risks delaying Britain's exit from the European Union, or leaving without a deal, a step that could thrust the world's fifth largest economy into the unknown.

"Basically, if there is a vote of confidence it is not just for a year".

"During that time I expect us to hammer out the full and final details of the framework that will underpin our future relationship", she said.

Her biggest challenge will be getting the deal through parliament.

Mrs May was forced to defend her deal with Brussels to a series of callers, including Conservative-supporting councillor Daniel Turner from Louth who told her to "stand down and allow someone from the Brexit camp to take the lead".

"A change of leadership at this point isn't going to make the negotiations any easier and it isn't going to change the parliamentary arithmetic", she told Sky News in an interview.
