Democrats seek hearings on Trump's ouster of Sessions

US Attorney General Jeff Sessions Says Resigning At Trump's Request

US Attorney General Jeff Sessions was sacked by Donald Trump on Wednesday after enduring more than a year of bitter criticism from the president over his decision to step aside from the Russian Federation investigation that has dogged the White House.

Before Trump gave a news conference on Wednesday, White House Chief of Staff John Kelly called Sessions and told him that Trump wanted him out, the official said.

Clovis, the 2016 Trump campaign national co-chairman, said in a May radio interview that he has been interviewed by the special counsel's team and had testified before the Mueller grand jury. Whitaker, a former Republican politician, has publicly called for limits on the Mueller probe. The almost year and a half long investigation by the special counsel stems from allegations of Russian Federation coordinating with members of the Trump presidential campaign. However, it would be an immediate priority for Democratic investigations when they officially take control of the House in January.

According to legal analysts cited by The Guardian, Trump's decision may set off a constitutional crisis over the fate of the Mueller inquiry, which followed a conclusion by United States intelligence agencies that Russian Federation intervened to help Trump win in 2016.

"We are watching what appears to be continued obstruction by this White House", Pocan said in a telephone interview. "We knew that [Trump] is a guy that acts guilty", she said, calling on the crowd to chant "guilty!" so that Trump "can hear it".

Asked to comment on the Democrats' call for a special counsel protection bill, a spokeswoman for the office of House Speaker Paul Ryan, a Republican, referred to past remarks by Ryan.

A furious US President Donald Trump on Wednesday fired his attorney general Jeff Sessions and threatened to retaliate with a "warlike posture" against the new Democratic House majority if it uses its subpoena power to launch investigations into his administration, signaling a precipitous deterioration in the domestic politics of the world's leading democracy. But its fate now depends on the acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker - who's been openly critical of the investigation.

"Donald Trump has installed a crony to oversee the special counsel's Trump-Russia investigation, crossing a red line set to protect the investigation", organizers said on a Facebook Event page for the protest.

"Because a reasonable person could question your impartiality in the matter, your recusal is necessary to maintain public trust in the integrity of the investigation and to protect the essential and longstanding independence of the Department you have been chosen to lead, on an acting basis", the letter addressed to Whitaker said.

Noting that the special counsel's budget falls within the attorney general's purview, Whitaker said he could envision a situation in which Sessions was replaced as attorney general and replaced by a new boss who doesn't fire Mueller but "just reduces his budget to so low that his investigation grinds to nearly a halt". "There is no mistaking what this means, and what is at stake: this is a constitutionally perilous moment for our country and for the president".

So Democrats like Chuck Schumer have claimed that the President's firing of his Attorney General represents, or may soon represent, a constitutional crisis. The Senate Judiciary Committee advanced a bill in April that would allow a special counsel who was sacked to challenge that action in court. But no action is expected.
