Secretary Pompeo: We have great concerns about China's actions, disagreements

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo shakes hands with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Pyongyang

A USA official told reporters traveling with Pompeo that the visit to North Korea was "better than" Pompeo's fraught previous trip to the North Korean capital in July, while adding there was a "long haul" ahead.

Secretary of State Michael Pompeo told South Korean President Moon Jae-in upon his arrival in Seoul that Kim had agreed to meet with Trump "as soon as possible", according to a statement from Moon's office. -Chinese relations as the administration of President Donald Trump confronts Beijing over its technology policies and territorial claims in the South China Sea.

Pompeo, who was briefing Wang following his visit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, said, "The issues that you characterized, we have a fundamental disagreement".

He earlier said "significant progress" was made during his visit toward an agreement for North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons. "We will be having more frequent and higher level working level group discussions than we have had in some time".

"Together with Mike Pompeo, Kim Jong Un appreciated the positively developing situation on the Korean Peninsula", said KCNA. She also said she believed the two countries "wouldn't be here without Trump". The North has rejected that and South Korea has suggested it may not be a necessary next step.

"I know that during your visit, you also want to exchange views with the Chinese side on regional hotspot issues including the situation in the Korean Peninsula", Wang said, adding that this demonstrates as two major powers and permanent members of the UN Security Council, China and the United States should strengthen communication and cooperation, so as to live up to the responsibilities entrusted by the worldwide community.

"I would certainly expect so", the official said.

The KCNA said that Kim also expressed "will" and "conviction" to make progress on issues of mutual concern, apparently indicating the denuclearization talks that have nearly been stalled since the June summit in Singapore.

North Korea so far has suspended nuclear and missile tests, freed three American prisoners and dismantled parts of a missile engine facility and tunnel entrances at a nuclear test site.

Washington and Pyongyang have sparred over the exact terms of the vaguely-worded agreement in Singapore, with the U.S. pushing to maintain sanctions and pressure against the North until its "final, fully verified denuclearisation".

That's a shift in tone from North Korean headlines after previous talks, where they accused Pompeo of making "gangster-like" demands.

The North Korean leader also invited inspectors to visit the Punggye-ri nuclear test facility, which Pyongyang took apart in May, "to confirm that it has been irreversibly dismantled", the State Department said. US officials have thus far said the penalties will remain in place until the North's denuclearization is fully verified.

Also on Monday, South Korean President Moon Jae-in said he expects Kim to travel to Russian Federation and for Chinese President Xi Jinping to visit North Korea soon amid a global diplomatic push to resolve the nuclear crisis.

Moon also said there was a possibility of Kim holding a summit with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
