Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi 'was killed inside Saudi consulate'

Turkey believes Saudi journalist was killed in consulate

Erdoğan said authorities were investigating evidence over entrances and exits of both the Saudi consulate and Istanbul airports.

Turkish sources quoted by Reuters and the Washington Post say they believe he has been killed inside the consulate.

Saudi Arabia's consul-general previously said his country was helping to search for Mr Khashoggi and dismissed talk of abduction. "We have nothing to hide", in the interview published Friday.

"The Saudi authorities must immediately give a full and credible accounting of what happened to Khashoggi inside its diplomatic mission", the CPJ said in a statement. Relations were already strained after Turkey sent troops to the Gulf state of Qatar past year in a show of support after its Gulf neighbours, including Saudi Arabia, imposed an embargo on Doha.

Authorities came to see Khashoggi as too progressive and he was forced to resign as editor-in-chief of the Saudi daily Al-Watan in 2003.

Mr Khashoggi reportedly left his phone with her - plus instructions to call a member of Turkey's governing party if he failed to return. While he applauded the social reforms spearheaded by the leadership-such as the decision to allow women to drive-he spoke out against the crackdown against the shrinking space for freedom of speech in Saudi Arabia.

A former government adviser who has been critical of some policies of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Riyadh's intervention in the war in Yemen, Khashoggi has lived in self-imposed exile in the United States since past year to avoid possible arrest.

"I do miss home very much".

Pressed on how he would regard Trump's humiliating rhetoric against Saudi Arabia, the crown prince described the controversial remarks as a "bad issue" offset by "99 percent of good things". I wasn't a critic, I wasn't an activist-I wasn't even against the government.

The crown prince told Bloomberg that the IPO was "100 percent" in the kingdom's interest. And Saudi Arabia and OPEC and non-OPEC countries, they've produced 1.5 million barrels a day.

After several of his friends were arrested, his column was cancelled by the al-Hayat newspaper and he was allegedly warned to stop tweeting, Mr Khashoggi left Saudi Arabia for the U.S., from where he wrote opinion pieces for the Washington Post and continued to appear on Arab and Western TV channels.

It said Saudi Arabia sent a team of investigators to help look into the case.

Turkey has taken the side of Qatar over its blockade by Saudi Arabia and other neighbours, and Turkey's rapprochement with Iran has riled the government in Riyadh.

If confirmed, Khashoggi's murder would "constitute a horrific, utterly deplorable, and absolutely unacceptable assault on press freedom", the Paris-based Reporters Without Borders said on Twitter. He said the Saudi royal family were just as afraid as common citizens that Prince Mohammed might order their arrest for speaking out. "It was a pre-planned murder", said one of the people. "If I go back, I have to dance their dance".

He began his career as a journalist with Saudi dailies in the 1980s, covering the Afghanistan conflict for the Saudi press.
