Aid Indonesia Earthquake and Tsunami Victims

1,200 convicts escape Indonesian prisons in quake-tsunami zone

Officials fear the toll could soar, as most of the confirmed dead had come from Palu, a small city 1,500 km (930 miles) northeast of Jakarta, while some remote areas have been cut off since Friday's 7.5 magnitude quake triggered tsunami waves.

"This must be done as soon as possible for health and religious reasons", he said.

Thousands of survivors have converged on Palu's airport in a bid to leave the devastated city, as elsewhere victims were buried in a mass grave.

Nugroho said 114 foreigners were in Palu and nearby Donggala during the disaster.

As of now, . the confirmed death toll stands well in excess of 800, . and that figure is expected to rise.

There are fears that some survivors may still be trapped under the rubble of that and other buildings.

On Monday, in Ulujadi district in western Palu, residents deprived of food and water blocked roads to intercept trucks carrying food supplies, with police officers reportedly unable to restrain the crowds.

Ridwan Sobri, a spokesperson for the Indonesian Red Cross, told the BBC: "The mud conditions in that area are bad, we have to walk about one-and-a-half hours to reach [the mudslide area], that makes it very hard". "We just want to be safe!".

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday called up Indonesian President Joko Widodo and offered assistance to the tsunami-hit country. "We have anticipated it by providing food, rice, but it was not enough".

Armed guards are also present at the ports, where aid supplies are being brought in. Shortly after, a tsunami with waves of up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) hit the coast, leaving at least 844 people dead and dozens missing. The relief coordination centers would soon be set up in Parigi Mouton Donggala, Palu and Sigi.

New Zealand is providing $1.6 million to help the emergency response to the deadly quake and tsunami in Indonesia that killed at least 840 people.

Additionally, according to Nugroho, some 50,000 people have been displaced from their homes.

There are still hopes that people may yet be alive, buried under rubble across the region.

"The ground rose up like a spine and suddenly fell".

"The scale of the damage from the quake and tsunami is huge and there are fears many people are trapped under collapsed buildings like hotels and supermarkets", says Ancilla Bere, Oxfam's Humanitarian Manager in Indonesia. "I could do nothing to help", resident Nur Indah said, with tears in their eyes.
