Afghanistan: Kandahar goes to polls after week's delay

Suicide bomber targets electoral officials in Kabul

Ministry of Interior (MoI) on Monday said they have arrested 60 people in connection with crimes related to parliamentary elections that took place on October 21 and 22 across the country and on October 27 in Kandahar.

The Kandahar governor's spokesman says major roads throughout the province were closed Friday to all vehicles, except those with prior security clearance.

One police officer was killed and six others, including election workers and policemen, were wounded in the blast. "They can not find people's names on the voters' list".

According to police, a suicide bomber on foot, detonated his explosives close to the gate of the offices.

Voting in Kandahar was pushed back a week after police chief Gen. Abdul Raziq Achakzai was killed in a Taliban-claimed attack October 18, two days before the election. "Doubtless that a number of candidates wanted to use these people for their own benefit in the elections", said Danish. Technical glitches with a new biometric identification system introduced to stem fraud allegations instead created massive confusion and caused delays lasting hours, frustrating voters and challenging the credibility of the polls.

An independent monitoring group said voting was also marred by ballot stuffing and intimidation by armed men affiliated with candidates in 19 of the country's 32 provinces that were voting last weekend.

The eastern province of Ghazni has also seen its polls delayed due to security and logistical issues.
