Woods ends five-year drought with Tour Championship triumph

Tiger Woods won the PGA Tour Championship on Sunday in what is already being heralded as one of the greatest comebacks in sporting history.

It was a day that many thought might never happen again after Woods underwent spinal fusion surgery in April previous year and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence the following month when he was found asleep at the wheel of his auto.

Woods' 80th career PGA Tour win was a lock when he rolled a final-round 71 to best Billy Horschel, but the five years leading up to the tourney suggested Tiger's victory window may very well have closed. The tournament took place in East Lake Golf Club and marked Woods first victory after a gap of five years. "To get 80 is a pretty damn good feeling".

Shortly after the win, congratulations poured in from around the world, including from Jack Nicklaus, who Woods is still chasing for the record for most major tournament victories. "But as the year progressed I found my swing and put the pieces together and I knew I could do it".

One year ago, Woods was still waiting for his lower back to fuse and wasn't sure he could ever play again.

"With today's equipment, and the way the guys take care of themselves, I think they could play well into their 50s", he told the Golf Channel.

Woods was also in contention to win the FedEx Cup before Rose's birdie on the 18th ensured a T4 finish to maintain his spot atop of the overall standings.

The former world No. 1 played his final round alongside McIlroy, whose own hopes of victory dissipated after he carded a disappointing 74, but was full of admiration for his one-time golfing idol.

"It's certainly up there with obviously all the major championships I've won, Players, World Golf Championships", Woods said, at once elated and reflective in his post-round press conference.

Woods said that only the people closest to him during this most recent comeback knew what he had experienced. "Not that this event needs much more energy brought to it [because] it's probably the biggest, the grandest event in all of golf, but [Woods' win] will add that much more excitement, I believe". "I do really admire the European crowd and I know they will be loud and I'm anxious to see it".

Furyk admits a number of fans were "unruly" at Hazeltine - but is not expecting to receive the same treatment at Le Golf National when the biennial contest starts on Friday. That was when he was regularly winning multiple times every season, compiling trophies at a rate never before seen in golf.

These striking TV numbers for Tiger Woods' final round came on an NFL Sunday, too.

But none carry the weight that Woods does even if his Ryder Cup record is poor by his previously high standards.

He now heads to Paris as part of a USA team seeking to win overseas for the first time since 1993.
