Kansai International Airport to close runway Sunday due to Typhoon Trami

Typhoon Trami is the latest storm to threaten the Japanese archipelago in a year filled with more than the usual number of disasters, including punishing heat, heavy rains and landslides.

A large and very powerful Typhoon No. 24 was churning toward western Japan on September 29 and whipping up winds of more than 90 kph that caused a power outage affecting one-third of households in southernmost Okinawa Prefecture.

Streets in the Okinawa prefectural capital of Naha were deserted Sept 29 as winds and rain from Typhoon No. 24 battered the island.

Some 700 people were evacuated to shelters in Okinawa and electricity was cut to almost 200,000 homes, public broadcaster NHK said.

Precipitation over the 24-hour period ending 6 a.m. on October 1 is estimated at up to 500 millimeters in Shikoku and Tokai, 450 millimeters in Kinki, 400 millimeters in Kanto-Koshin, 350 millimeters in northern and southern Kyushu, and 250 millimeters in the Chugoku and Hokuriku regions of western and northern Japan.

The storm is expected to pass through Honshu island, where Tokyo is situated, between Sunday and Monday and leave the northern island of Hokkaido by Monday midday.

Kansai International Airport in Osaka, western Japan, which was heavily flooded by a typhoon last month, said it had closed its runways from 11am (02:00 GMT) on Sunday until 6am on Monday.

Over 380 flights were cancelled in Japan on Saturday ahead of Typhoon Trami's arrival.

The storm cut power to about 200,000 homes on Japan's southern islands, and uprooted tress and overturned vehicles as it pummeled Okinawa city.

The typhoon was coming very close to the southern part of Kyushu in southern Japan in the morning of September 30 and was dumping torrential rain in the area.

Television footage showed cars in Okinawa island flipped over by the strength of the wind.

Earlier in the typhoon season, Typhoon Jebi, the strongest storm to hit Japan's mainland in 25 years, smashed through the west of the country, killing at least 10 people and causing widespread damage through high winds and storm surges. Several houses were flooded or damaged and 40 people on the island sustained minor injuries but no one was feared dead, local officials said.

Trami gradually picked up speed as it moved toward southwestern Japan. Train service in Kyoto, Osaka and Kobe districts, as well as the bullet train between Tokyo and western Japan, will be suspended through portions of Sunday, NHK said.

A large, very strong typhoon is set to rip through mainland Japan over the weekend, bringing violent winds and torrential rain.
