Herald Sun Cartoonist Defends Racist, Sexist Serena Williams Cartoon

Serena fined $17000 after US Open final outburst

Singer Kelly Rowland spoke out in Serena Williams' defense about chair umpire Carlos Ramos fining the tennis superstar $17,000 during her U.S. Open finals loss to Naomi Osaka on Saturday.

Mother of all meltdowns.

Answering a comment from Julie Di Caro, Knight wrote: "Well Julie here's a cartoon I drew a few days before when Australian male tennis player Kyrgios at the US Open was behaving badly".

And as renowned author HL Mencken once proclaimed in explaining Williams' ranting and raving: "Injustice is relatively easy to bear; what stings more is justice".

The chair umpire that Serena Williams called a thief in Saturday's U.S. Open women's final has always been one of the on-court officials willing to enforce the rules without fear or favour on the game's biggest stars, male and female.

Williams was docked a point for smashing a racquet and she called umpire Carlos Ramos a "thief" and a "liar", an outburst for which she was sanctioned a game at a critical juncture in the second set.

Though Osaka's moment of glory was overshadowed by Serena Williams' meltdown during her stunning 6-2, 6-4 upset of her idol at the weekend, the 20-year-old demonstrated she has the game, and the grit, to be a serial victor, according to Date. "Although entirely refusing to shake Ramos' hand, Williams graciously told crowds: "[Osaka] played well, this is her first Grand Slam.

He called her performance "unbelievable" and forecast a major boon for the Australian Open, which bills itself as the Grand Slam of the Asia-Pacific.

Williams accused the umpire of sexism during the match - and she has received considerable support for this claim, including from the WTA.

Others on Twitter agreed the incident was reflective of how women are treated in wider society.

Williams herself said she had not had negative experiences when Ramos had worked her matches in the past.

Tiley says the rise of Japanese victor Naomi Osaka is only good news for his tournament, badged as the grand slam of the Asia-Pacific.

But if that were to be so, we are nothing but poor chroniclers of history that was made in front of us: 20-year-odl Osaka became the first player ever from Japan to lift a Grand Slam title, in a match where she bested her childhood idol in every department. In her previous win against Serena, she said, "Just playing against her is kind of like a dream for me".

Venus also argued with the umpire's decision in 2016. Simon believes that coaching should be allowed across the events and regardless of gender.

"We have never discussed signals", she said, according to the Daily Mail. "We don't have any code, and I know that you don't know that and I understand why you may have thought that was coaching, but I'm telling you it's not".

Earley, the tournament referee, levied fines against Williams of $4,000 for the coaching violation, $3,000 for racket abuse and $10,000 for the verbal abuse, the USTA said. The row escalated and she was given a third violation for her conduct, which resulted in a game penalty.
