'Heartbreaking': Naomi Osaka brought to tears as US Open fans boo

US Open champion Naomi Osaka insisted she was mystified by Serena Williams' spectacular meltdown which saw the tennis legend accuse the chair umpire of being a "liar and a thief".

To her credit, Williams tried to put the spotlight back on Osaka after the match. It's one of the things Osaka always admired about Williams, made her choose her as the topic of that report years ago.

Minori Nakano, a teacher and translator from the city of Kobe in western Japan, praised 20-year-old Osaka's after-match comments in English as "so cool and yet so Japanese".

Asked if the umpire had to give her the warning, Williams responded: "No, because I wasn't being coached". Tom, thank you for joining us. I think, you know, what Serena was talking about - the unfairness of the entire thing. While Osaka's victory is remarkable on its own, this year's controversial US Open may be sparking a broader debate about sexism in sports.

Osaka apologized to the crowd. "I'm not a Serena fan-I'm just a tennis player playing another tennis player", Osaka said. "I don't cheat! I didn't get coaching". There was no thumbs-up sign. But I really feel like I don't want to overthink this match, so I'm not going to think that she's so much better than she was in Miami. He also said everyone does it and usually is not called for it.

That brought another tirade from Williams which was followed by a game penalty, bringing a shower of jeers from the packed stadium and another explosive outburst from the teary American.

Osaka had given Williams plenty of respect but no other concessions as she grabbed the early break on a double fault by her idol for a 2-1 first set lead that she would not let go. A second code violation came with a point penalty to start the next game that sent her into orbit.

All of this did take a toll on Osaka but after she had close out the match. Mouratoglou did it in a more obvious way, tennis coaches around the world have more subtle ways too.

Broken again to trail 4-3, Williams continued to berate umpire Ramos. I'm curious, in both matches you've played well. "I don't want to do questions", she said on court. "Help me make sure she sees it!"

Osaka was only a year old when Williams won her first slam title here in 1999. "You took a point from me.' That's exactly what Serena did", USA Today columnist and ABC News commentator Christine Brennan told WTOP.

"I don't cheat to win". That is on her, not the umpire. The umpire instantly awarded a game to Osaka citing a "verbal abuse call" against Williams.

Williams called the tournament referee onto the court and began crying as she explained her version of events.

It was the second Grand Slam final defeat in a row for Williams, after Wimbledon in July.

Naomi Osaka won her first Grand Slam title Saturday, also becoming the first Japanese woman ever to win a Grand Slam final.

In a statement, the WTA said: "There are matters that need to be looked into that took place during the match". For tonight, it is time to celebrate these two fantastic players, both of whom have great integrity.

Keys was not without chances after amassing 13 break point opportunities throughout but she was unable to convert any against the impenetrable 20th seed.
