CBS boss Moonves quits as more women make explicit sex misconduct claims

CBS Chief Executive Leslie Moonves expected to resign after new sex harassment allegations

Moonves denied the allegations, and characterized his relationships with some of the women as consensual.

Under Moonves's contract, the 68-year-old could be owed as much as US$180 million in severance - as well as a production deal - but the CEO had been facing challenges on a number of fronts.

The network's chief operating officer, Joseph Ianniello, will serve as president and acting CEO until CBS's Board of Directors looks for a replacement.

Under the settlement, CBS dropped its move to dilute control of the Redstone family's National Amusements Inc.to 17 percent from 79 percent, the companies said in a statement. Insiders say they did their best to focus on the work of running a media company with a $21 billion market cap.

"It was quite a few times that those women would come back and say, 'I'm never going up there again, ' " Debra Williams, who was then spa director, tells Farrow, adding that a hotel official warned Moonves to stop the behavior.

The New Yorker quoted a statement in which he said: "The appalling accusations in this article are untrue".

That turned Moonves into one of this highest paid executives in America: He took home almost $70 million in each of the past two years.

Ten months ago, Norah O'Donnell had the hard job of reporting on the ouster of her "CBS This Morning" co-host Charlie Rose because of sexual misconduct allegations.

"Gayle said, 'I didn't think we'd still be the story in September, '" O'Donnell related.

Allred told Reuters she is representing two clients in the matter who are willing to cooperate with an ongoing independent investigation, "and I do think it is important that the board receive a report".

When reached for comment by Business Insider, CBS provided the following statement: "CBS takes these allegations very seriously".

Dozens of other women have complained that sexual misconduct was tolerated in parts of the company.

Moonves' allies will surely cast his exit as a corporate coup - a successful effort by Redstone to gain a tighter grip on CBS.

Farrow said some of the women spoke out because they felt CBS was failing to take appropriate action against Moonves.

"I am deeply saddened to be leaving the company", Moonves added, calling it "an incredible privilege" to have worked for CBS. The women include former executives, assistants, make-up artists, and writers, many of whom left the industry after their traumatic experiences with Moonves.

CBS' board of directors is near completion of a settlement that would both end its litigation with its controlling shareholder National Amusements - and sever ties with long time CEO Leslie Moonves, according to people familiar with the situation.

Moonves has responded to the New Yorker story, acknowledging three of the encounters but saying they were consensual. But if he is removed "for cause", relating to the harassment allegations, for example, such an eye-popping severance package would not be in play. Farrow writes that law enforcement sources found her allegation credible, but the statute of limitations had expired.

While it was initially believed that the disgraced television exec stood to earn at least $100 million in his severance package, Farrow has since revealed via Twitter, "CBS confirmed that Moonves is leaving with no exit compensation pending outcome of investigation, and that he and CBS will donate $20 million to charities".
