Two Koreas agree to hold September summit in Pyongyang

South & North Korea to hold summit in Pyongyang in September

South Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) agreed Monday to hold a third summit between South Korean President Moon Jae-in and top DPRK leader Kim Jong Un in Pyongyang in September. Moreover, the negotiations would be dedicated to what had been achieved by the two sides since their previous summits, the outlet suggested.

The ministerial talks began on the North's side of the truce village of Panmunjom on Monday.

The announcement followed two hours of talks between senior officials in the demilitarised zone, which had been proposed by North Korea.

"There were mentions that if there are problems to be resolved by both sides, on humanitarian issues or for the development of inter-Korean relations, we should do it", the minister told reporters.

A trip by the President Moon to the North's capital would be the first such visit for more than a decade, as the diplomatic thaw on the peninsula builds.

Pyongyang saw a second inter-Korean summit in 2007 when Roh Moo-hyun also met Kim Jong-il.

Moon has always been an advocate for greater engagement with North Korea, dating back to his days as a key presidential aide in the 2000s.

However, he said it was important to clear "obstacles" that prevent inter-Korean relations from moving forward as planned.

They met again in May in advance of Kim's summit with US President Donald Trump in Singapore.

The talks Monday are happening at a North Korea-controlled building in the border village of Panmunjom.

The meeting in Pyonguyang comes as questions have been raised about North Korea leader Kim Jong Un's commitment to denuclearization following his summit in June with President TrumpDonald John TrumpMattis defends reversing his stance on Trump's "Space Force" Pelosi: Trump engages in racism "constantly" Tom Steyer: Pelosi is wrong about Trump impeachment push MORE.

Seoul has been examining nine cases of potential imports of North Korean coal, which would breach a resolution passed last August by the U.N. Security Council to choke off funding for Pyongyang's nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

Experts say Moon could try to act as a mediator between the United States and North Korea, having salvaged the Singapore meeting when Trump abruptly cancelled it.

Kim Eui-keum, spokesman for South Korea's presidential Blue House, told reporters that "early September seems a bit hard".
