The Oscars have announced a brand new category

Oscars 2020 Airdate Announced and Changes Teased by AMPAS

The 91st Annual Academy Awards, honoring the film achievements of 2018, will take place February 24, 2019.

Major changes are coming to the Oscars next year.

The Academy is making some changes, and they are-to be frank-absolutely bad.

A three-hour Oscar telecast.

President John Bailey and CEO Dawn Hudson announced that three key alterations have been made for future ceremonies. Read the full message to Academy members below.

In a letter to members of the Academy, the organization's board of. Others will be presented during commercial breaks, with the winners' acceptances "edited and aired later in the broadcast".

This is especially interesting as the Marvel Cinematic Universe has never won an Oscar - embarrassingly, despite Suicide Squad grabbing a Best Makeup and Hairstyling gong previous year - but that could very well change with this new award category. The 92nd Oscars telecast will move to Sunday, February 9, 2020, from the previously announced February 23. They argue the change "will not affect awards eligibility dates or the voting process".

The 91st Academy Awards ceremony will air February 24, 2019.

In a statement, it said: "We have heard from many of you about improvements needed to keep the Oscars and our Academy relevant in a changing world".

It's among three changes approved on Tuesday by the Academy's board of governors.

Best Achievement In Popular Film. Many wrote that they hoped the category will be about stunt work. Certain categories - which have yet to be announced but will presumably include those honoring technical achievement - will be presented during commercial breaks.

- Atlee Northmore (@southless95)I hope you will still telecast ALL categories including shorts. After that, however, expanding the Best Picture field has largely just meant adding more indies that no one's seen to the lineup. The Oscars are meant to award artistic excellence in film, even if they seem too-often content to award excellence in Oscar campaigning - so why a separate category that can't help but be seen as an also-ran, a consolation prize? Period. There's no need to put a "popular film" label on it.
