Once-eased United States economic sanctions against Iran back in effect

Trump team unites in bid to topple Iran regime

The sanctions were previously softened by the Obama administration as part of a landmark 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran.

USA sanctions on oil sales snap back are scheduled to snap back in early November.

The European Union's diplomatic chief Federica Mogherini said the bloc deeply regrets the United States move. These are the most biting sanctions ever imposed, and in November they ratchet up to yet another level. "I am asking for WORLD PEACE, nothing less", he added. Trump tweeted on Tuesday.

Other countries have also asked European Union officials for details on the blocking regulations, as they explore ways to bypass sanctions.

The US today reimposed extraterritorial sanctions on Iran, meaning that foreign companies that do not comply with them could be fined or face being cut-off from the US market. Behnam Ben Taleblu of the Foundation for Defence of Democracies said they "signal that the administration is serious in its intent to recreate the leverage that existed between the United States and Iran prior to the nuclear deal".

More U.S. sanctions targeting Iran's oil sector and central bank are to be reimposed in early November.

In a TV appearance, Iran's President Hassan Rouhani accused Washington of "wanting to launch a psychological war against the Iranian nation".

"If you're an enemy and you stab the other person with a knife and then you say you want negotiations, then the first thing you have to do is remove the knife". He said Tehran has always believed in resolving disputes diplomatically. "But talks need honesty".

The US has long designated Iran as the world's foremost state sponsor of terrorism, Pompeo noted Sunday, adding that the Islamic Republic can not expect to be treated as an equal in the global community until it halts such activities.

The nuclear deal is closely associated in Iran with Rouhani, a relative moderate who won two landslide elections on promises to open up the economy to the outside world. Trump abandoned the deal in May.

"We are determined to protect European economic operators engaged in legitimate business with Iran", said High Representative Federica Mogherini and E3 foreign ministers, Jean-Yves Le Drian (France), Heiko Maas (Germany) and Jeremy Hunt (UK) in a joint statement.

Since the sanctions were initially lifted two years ago, Iranian oil exports have risen.

There have been protests in Iran this year against rising prices, and the security forces have responded firmly.

The second phase of U.S. sanctions, which takes effect on 5 November and will block Iran's oil sales, is due to cause more damage, but several countries including China, India and Turkey have indicated they are not willing to entirely cut their Iranian energy purchases.

"[Sanctions] will definitely make daily life harder for Iranians", said Saeed Leylaz, a Tehran-based economist and political analyst.

"If Iran were really serious they'd come to the table".

Many large European firms are leaving Iran for fear of United States penalties, and Trump warned of "severe consequences" for firms and individuals that continued to do business with Iran.

British Minister of State for the Middle East Alistair Burt said Europe can protect its companies from new U.S. sanctions which were reinstated on Tuesday, as the European Union activated a blocking statute to insulate firms against any fallout.
