Bodies found as floods recede in India

Kerala floods Worst rains in a century kills over 300 displaces 3 lakh entire state on alert for more showers

About 800,000 people have been displaced and more than 350 have died in the worst flooding in a century in southern India's Kerala state, according to officials. The army said Sunday that 250 people had been evacuated from Pathanamthitta district, many of them sick after days in the pounding monsoon rain. "About 500 fisheries boats have been at the forefront of the rescue and shifting operations".

"The flood has bonded the people like never before, with people sharing whatever they had".

It is estimated that the floods have caused damage worth $3 billion (€2.6 billion), though the sum is likely to rise as authorities grapple with the full scope of the devastation. "This will be raised by us through various sources besides getting it from the Centre and other agencies", he said. "But where could I go?"

Thousands of army, navy and air force personnel have fanned out to help those stranded in remote and hilly areas.

Suri said the UAE authorities, including the Central Bank, have given the clearance for sending money directly to the Kerala Chief Minister's Disaster Relief Fund (CMDRF), which Suri said was the best way to help the flood victims.

Thousands of rescuers were continuing efforts to reach out to stranded people and get relief supplies to isolated areas by hundreds of boats and almost two dozen helicopters, Kurian said. "Never before had the State witnessed a calamity of this scale".

Kerala state is home to 33 million people and is known for its tourist beaches and hill resorts. The 65-year-old, who has been living with his family at a relief camp for more than a week, returned briefly to his nearby home Monday to find it uninhabitable and without drinking water or electricity.

CM Vijayan has also called for an all-party meeting in Thiruvananthapuram to assess the flood situation.

With heavy rains stopping after a week, rescuers moved quickly to take people marooned by floods to 1,500 state-run camps.

When did the flooding start?

Rescuers waded into submerged villages in southern India on August 19 in a desperate search for survivors cut off for days by floods that have already killed more than 350 people. The AP reports that "officials estimate that more than 10,000 kilometers (6,200 miles) of roads have been damaged". They have chose to give $100 million as assistance, that would be 700 crore in Indian rupees. The Government of Maldives also extended help to India by donating US$ 50,000 for the ongoing rescue operations.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum of the United Arab Emirates, where many Keralites work, said he had formed a committee to extend emergency assistance to the flood victims of the state, whose people he said "have always been and are still part of our success story".
