Zimbabwe: Expect Results From 3.pm - ZEC

Nelson Chamisa

"We are however seriously concerned about evidence of interference. there is a deliberate delay in announcing the results".

According to ZEC chairperson Priscilla Chigumba, the presidential results will only be announced after all the results have been received and collated.

But Bloomberg reported that the Zimbabwe Election Support Network, an association of 34 civil rights and religious organisations, said that while the political environment was calm and peaceful, the ruling party utilised state resources to campaign, used aid to force people to vote for it and enjoyed more favourable media coverage.

"Overall (there was) a huge amount of voting - especially young people, mostly in a very good atmosphere, generally peaceful, which is positive".

She said she was confident there was no "cheating" and that the commission will respect the will of Zimbabweans: "We will not steal their choice of leaders".

The contenders in Zimbabwe's vote must accept the results and "should look at the larger picture of success - a successful election for Zimbabwe", he said.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission put voter turnout as high as 75% in some areas. The victor needs more than 50 percent of the vote to win outright and avoid a run-off in September.

Each polling station must post its results outside after vote-counting, she said.

Counting had continued through the night after a strong turnout in Zimbabwe's first election without Mugabe, who was ousted by the military last year after 37 years in office. Some people are quietly discussing unofficial results circulating on social media, while others openly argue that their political parties won Monday's election even though the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has yet to release preliminary results. "Waiting patiently for official results as per the constitution", Mnangagwa, 75, Mugabe's former right-hand man, said on Twitter.

Zimbabweans are awaiting the first results from an election that they hope will lift the country out of economic and political stagnation after decades of rule by former leader Robert Mugabe.

Nearly 5.7 million registered to vote in the election that had 23 candidates vying for the presidency and 130 political parties running for Parliament and council.
