Wimbledon 2018 final: Kevin Anderson vs Novak Djokovic

Novak Djokovic

Can't connect right now! Given that, this victory represents a big comeback; on Sunday he will have a crack at another Wimbledon title when he goes up against Kevin Anderson, a men's final that nobody could have predicted.

The two players didn't even get onto the court until after 8 pm because of an earlier marathon semi-final won by Kevin Anderson and when Djokovic converted his second set point in the tiebreaker - having saved three of Nadal's - the clock had ticked a couple of minutes past 11.

Isner had previously come out victorious in the longest match in history in 2010 at Wimbledon against Nicolas Mahut, which lasted 11 hours and five minutes over three days.

Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic's semifinal Wimbledon match was cut off immediately after the third set because of a stadium curfew. "They're pretty antsy for us to get off the court".

"I'm just overwhelmed. This kind of match you live for, you work for", Djokovic said after qualifying for his 18th grand slam final.

"It feels like it´s a draw but somebody has to win". "If I was on the opposite side, I don't know how you take it - getting through something like that is quite different". "It's doesn't matter who it is‚ it's going to be a huge challenge".

"Obviously if you told me that six months ago, I would take it right away. I think it's shown great interest for South Africa", said one man. ESPN tacked four hours onto its planned coverage, seeing the Isner-Anderson match to conclusion and sticking with Nadal-Djokovic until it was halted. Tennis legend and current commentator John McEnroe renewed his own calls for a change to Wimbledon's rules, both to keep the sport entertaining and also out of fairness to the players competing.

The extraordinary length of the match, in turn, delayed the start of Nadal-Djokovic, which promised to deliver higher-caliber tennis.

For the first time in the Open era, the semi-finals were made up exclusively of players over 30. But they grew restless once the match passed the five-hour mark, sighing and groaning with each failure to break serve.

The women's finals are set to take place on Saturday, pitting former champion Serena Williams of the USA against Angelique Kerber of Germany. The defeat especially stings because marathon play is nothing new to the 33-year-old American.

Leading 3-1, Nadal seemed comfortable but handed back the break, making some uncharacteristic errors in a poorly executed game.

It was a similar tale in the fourth set where the South African broke for 3-2 only to hand the break straight back. With Rafa and Novak there are no secrets‚ we've all seen these guys play a million times. "It's hard to come back after injuries for a long time and have these kind of results, so I am proud of myself". Nadal and Djokovic regularly - and spectacularly - ran down shots to force long rallies, drawing gasps and cheers from the appreciative crowd.
