THE NORTHERN TRUST Player Commits: McIlroy Schauffele Molinari

Tiger Woods of the US looks along the 1st fairway during the final round of the British Open Golf Championship in Carnoustie Scotland

He was a forgotten figure when he teed off in the final round of the British Open, mainly because he was playing with Tiger Woods, and because of the star power around him.

"So I ducked my head after I made double bogey. I've watched this through the PGA Tour this year day in and day out, seeing him work as hard as anyone else". That's just behind favorites Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson and Jordan Spieth.

Another dropped shot at the 17th meant he needed to hole his approach to No. 18 for eagle to force a playoff, but it settled about 12 feet short.

Despite being a few shots shy of the lead at the beginning of his round, Francesco Molinari has won the 2018 British Open Championship. Pepperell admitted to having too much to drink on Saturday night, though was no worse for wear considering the result, a 67 that helped propel him to his first top-10 major finish. He walked over to his caddie, Michael Greller, and said, "Damn it, I looked at the board, dude".

There were contrasting emotions for the four guys who finished closest to Molinari.

He had briefly tied the lead when he got to eight under after holing a 20-foot putt for his second birdie of the day at the second hole, but a late bogey left the four-time major victor three adrift of halfway leader Brian Harman.

Woods could still win at least one more major, although time is running out as the injury-plagued golfer isn't getting any younger.

Playing alongside the resurgent Woods in the final round, Molinari carded a nerveless two-under-par 69 to win the Claret Jug by two shots from McIlroy (70), English hope Justin Rose (69) and Americans Xander Schauffele (74) and Kevin Kisner (74).

For now, though, McIlroy should bottle up what he did on 14 and look to replicate that throughout the end of the course.

"I know that it's going to sting for a little bit here, but given where I was to where I'm at now, blessed". I don't back away.

"There's going to be a lot of European guys vying for his partnership in the foursomes at the Ryder Cup, that's for sure".

'It's amusing when you look back, how Tiger has been involved in so numerous greatest moments for Italian golf, ' he said.

"There were a lot of big names up there and it was nice to be a part of it". For a while, I thought Tiger was going to win and my mindset was "go and spoil the party here".

The "where I was" referred to the years of debilitating back pain that was finally solved by a spinal fusion last April, allowing him to resume his career after four years of severely-curtailed appearances. I have no regrets. "I want to know where it is so I try to hold on to it as long as possible".
