Prime Day drives record traffic to Amazon's Australian site

We're calling this one Christmas in July: Amazon Prime Day takes 28 percent off the Toshiba 50-inch 4K Ultra HD Smart LED TV with HDR - Fire TV Edition.

Amazon's website ran into some early snags Monday on its much-hyped Prime Day, an embarrassment for the tech company on the shopping holiday it created.

On Amazon.com it was not possible for many users to make purchases well into the second hour of the sale.

In Spain, the demonstrators marched under the banner, 'Amazon En Lucha, ' also the name of the group organizing the walkout at the company's fulfillment center just outside the Spanish capital of Madrid.

The Seattle-based Amazon says its sales topped Cyber Monday, Black Friday and last year's Prime Day, when comparing 36-hour periods. This year, the 36-hour event began at 3 p.m. on Monday and continued through Tuesday.

Prime members in 17 countries participated in the online shopping event, including - for the first time - Australia. Amazon's Prime Day starts and will be six hours longer than last year's and will launch new products. The company now has over 100 million paid Prime members, almost double the number from 2016 and 20 million more than the 2017 estimates.

Retailers beyond Amazon have made big plays on Prime Day, and even more this year held their own Prime Day events.

Highlights for shoppers a year ago included a 30% discount on the Amazon Echo Dot, an Alexa-enabled device capable of playing music, making calls and controlling smart home gadgets. Perhaps more importantly, though, was the surge in Prime membership. Target reported Wednesday that it had its largest online shopping day of the year on Tuesday. Amazon doesn't provide a geographical breakdown of its Prime members, but Prime Members are believed to spend more on average than customers who don't have the service, analysts have said. Only members of Amazon Prime are able to access all the deals.

"Prime Day offers us a unique opportunity to thank Prime members with our best deals", said Jeff Wilke, CEO Worldwide Consumer, Amazon.

Prime Day kicks off rapid online shopping growth for Q3: July-Sept.is expected to be the fastest growing quarter of 2018 in the U.S. Back to school shopping is expected to generate $57.79B in online revenue.

What else is on sale for Prime Day this year?

"Prime Day deals continue until midnight ... across all 23 categories, from toys and gaming consoles, to fashion and books, with deep discounts continuing throughout the day".
