Johnson and Davis resignations 'matters for Theresa May'

MPs prepare to move against May

The US president said it was "up to the people" whether or not Theresa May remained as prime minister.

British and European Union officials are hoping to strike a deal on the terms of Britain´s withdrawal and agree to a plan for future trade ties in time for an European Union summit in October.

Brexit secretary David Davis resigned late on Sunday night and Boris Johnson followed suit on Monday, resigning as foreign secretary less than 24 hours later.

Over the a year ago, she has conspired to betray her own party and many who held their noses and voted Tory for the first time or voted "leave" and thought she would deliver Brexit.

Under party rules, 48 Tory MPs, 15% of the party's 316-strong representation in the Common, must write to the chairman of the backbench 1922 Committee, Sir Graham Brady, to trigger a no-confidence vote.

If May survives the domestic political turmoil, she still has to convince European Union leaders that her proposals can work.

Mr Johnson's almost two years as foreign secretary was not without controversy, with the ambitious Tory heavyweight having been accused of undermining Mrs May on more than one occasion - and making headlines for other reasons. Perhaps least likely was the Cabinet agreeing on a detailed and realistic plan that would be acceptable to both Remainers and Leavers in the Conservative Party, never mind to the EU's 27 member states.

There were also junior ministerial resignations as well, according to The Guardian.

Mr Bradley said in his resignation letter that the Chequers plan would damage the UK's opportunities to develop global trade and be "an outward-looking nation in control of our own destiny" following Brexit. "That dream is dying, suffocated by needless self-doubt".

The ex-MP said there was a "plan" to curtail the role of the Brexit department.

"I've listened to every possible idea and every possible version of Brexit".

Asked about the potential impediments to the United Kingdom joining the trade deal under a soft Brexit scenario, Peters said: "I think what you're seeing in terms of United Kingdom politics right now is the difference between a soft and a hard Brexit, and we don't know where they're going to land".

Some Conservative Party lawmakers warned they would not tolerate a betrayal of Brexit.

Jacob Rees-Mogg, the leader of the influential pro-Brexit European Research Group of Tory MPs, said: "If the Government plans to get the Chequers deal through on the back of Labour Party votes that would be the most divisive thing you could do".

The two resignations have left May badly exposed and raised questions over whether she will stand firm in her commitment to pursuing a "business-friendly" Brexit, or will be faced with more resignations and calls to quit herself.

Asked whether May was in trouble following the rash of departures from her Government on Monday, the Environment Secretary replied: "No". He feels now that Britain is better off with somebody else taking the lead as Minister for Brexit who has a view consistent with the Prime Minister's position.

"Now there is chaos", the paper said in its editorial.

The proposals mean that the British government is hoping to partly continue in the European Union single market, and to some extent accept the jurisdiction of European Union courts.

"From an Irish perspective, negotiations are key to Ireland's future in terms of the final impact a deal would have on our trade and growth as a country".

Times columnist Rachel Sylvester said May´s authority "is utterly destroyed at the very moment she needs the credibility to assert herself in the negotiations with the EU".

By the time the Cabinet members emerged from their country house retreat, it looked like May had managed to combine option one with a large helping of fudge, which seemed to be quite a coup for a prime minister not used to success.
